This monastery is operated by the Congregazione Camaldolese dell'Ordine di San Benedetto.

Modern redevelopment of rooms while retaining period features.

Mass celebrated everyday at 7:00pm.

The monks allow guests to attend the masses and chanting in the chapel throughout the day - Lauds at 7.30am, Hora Media at 12.30pm and Vespers at 5.30pm.

Breakfast is included in the price, note that it is a simple coffee & a pastry served from the Monks vending machine.

There are many dining options within the Circo Massimo & Colosseum area, walking distance of the venue.

History

Dating back to the 6th century, this venue was built by Pope Gregory the Great atop ancient Roman ruins. The Camaldolesi order, started by San Romualdo, took control of the venue in the 16th century.

It has been updated and well maintained over the years, including extensive restoration in 2002.

	The building is magnificent, extraordinary. Where else can you wander into a room covered in paintings, and through that to a church where there is a marble chair which belonged to St Gregory the Great? It was an amazing privilege to stay there.

	The monastery is in an excellent location, very close to the train station and surprisingly quiet. The beds were firm but we like it that way. Once we worked out where the buzzer was for entry, it was very easy to come and go. We enjoyed our stay, would recommend it to others and would stay again.

	My husband and I stayed at San Gregorio for three nights at the end of a backpacking trip to Italy. It was wonderful. The monastery is peaceful, beautiful, centrally located close to the Colosseum, easily accessible by metro and bus. Father George was very kind and we went to Mass with the monks one evening as well. The room was clean and comfortable and the monks even gave us a credit for a coffee and snack machine which we really enjoyed. We would love to come back to Rome one day and when we do, we would love to stay again. Nota bene - there is a convent of the Missionary Sisters of Charity right next door and they allow visitors to stop by to visit a room where Mother Teresa stayed. We ran across the sisters by accident and got to visit Mother Teresa's room - another added and unexpected grace for our trip. If you're looking for a peaceful place to stay in the heart of the busy city, look no further!

	Our room was comfortable and quiet. There was a sour smell in the room that was very pungent on first entry (and each time we entered), but after being in the room for a few minutes, we didn’t notice it. We were very glad to have air conditioning! The beds were very comfortable, but the pillows could stand to be replaced. Father George, the lady at reception and the gentleman who cleaned the rooms were all very nice and helpful. Father George was even nice enough to meet us at the metro exit so we could find the location. The stairs to the monastery and our room on the top floor were killers, but it was good exercise. Having included access to the vending machine for drinks and snacks was very nice. The location was really great as well!

	The host, George, was very friendly. The building is beautiful. The rooms are very quiet, so you get a good nights sleep. Breakfast from a vending machine was a bit disappointing. Better to get Roman breakfast at one of the many trattoria :-). We were lucky that at the Circus Maximus, which is across the street, there were concerts in the evening. Lots of happpy people and good atmosphere when going back to the monastery in the evening. Walking distance from Colosseum (10 min max) and city centre is definitelly a big plus. We had a great stay!

	I loved this stay. However, was a little daunted by the steps in the beginning. After a day or two I had my walking and 'stair' legs. It was 80 steps from the street to our rooms. I would definitely stay there again. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. Beds were wonderful. I would definitely let people know about the stairs. Didn't ask if there was a back way. I don't think they had an elevator. It was a block from the Bus stop and Metro and several great Ristorantes. Also, just down the street from the Coliseum.

	This is a historic, atmospheric monastery, in a central location between the Colliseum & Circus Maximus, & close to those two metro stations. Apart from the monastery, there is little on the street other than monuments from ancient Rome; it's very peaceful. Monastic services take place in the main church & a smaller one; white robed monks sing hymns. The room was basic, but fine. Mine had a nice view of a monastery courtyard. Breakfast is supplied from vending machines; coffee & great croissants. There is a little roof garden towards the upper floor of bedrooms, where it's nice to have breakfast. Very little English was spoken at reception; the introductory letter from Monastery Stays got me by. The service was kind. You are immersed in Rome's history in this beautiful place.

	Excellent location for visiting the Roman Imperial area. The personnel were friendly and somewhat accommodating, but English is not their strong suite. Be aware that there are a fair number of stairs to climb with your luggage. We appreciated the fact that we had keys to the gate and door. We appreciated the fan that was in the room.

	The limitation of hours can be a problem for the weary traveller, but the cell phone number is there and I understand that it is a monastery and not a hotel. Secondly, WiFi is a critical part of the travellers world in 2013 and the lack of a WiFi area at the Monastery is the only thing that would make me think twice about staying there again.

	Really nice place to have a short stay in Rome. Rooms are simple, with renovated toilets. The room has single beds, a cupboard, desk, heating and big windows. Toilet was as big as the room, with shower, bidet and all amenities. No room service, but towels and toiletaries provided. If you have too much luggage, please advised that there are a zillion steps! No cafe in the premises, but the vending machine has soft drinks and amazing croissants for 1/2 euros! That was our breakfast every day. Highly recommended for those who are looking for reasonable, no-frills accommodation near Colosseum.

	The location is relatively near the Circo Massimo metro stop but not easy to get to. Another nearly 70 stairs if you are placed on the top floor of the guest house, as I was. For the weary traveller, getting home at night is an unwelcome ordeal. Service was rated a 5 because the trash was not taken out at all over my 7-day stay. Sleep quality was rated a 5 because the room is not air-conditioned, and to achieve a sleepable temperature, the window had to be left open. No screen on the window means bugs in the room, which means bug bites while sleeping.

	The location of this Monastery is UNSURPASSABLE in Rome. It is 200 metres from the Colosseum, and less than that to the Forum. We walked everywhere from this location. Despite being in the very centre of Rome, the Monastery is slightly off-the-main-drag, which provided some quiet. It is surrounded by large trees, which also helps. The staff were very friendly, and the facility itself is in excellent condition. The Church and chapel have beautiful artwork inside.
