House of the Oblati di Maria Vergine
A wonderful monastery, with pleasant surroundings, fantastic views and proximity to Rome - one of the best offerings in country Lazio.The main church in Rocca di Papa (the Duomo) is a wonderful sight that dominates the town, built in the 17th century and rebuilt in the 19th. Lake Albano is also close by (on the other side of the lake is the Pope's summer residence) and Rome is easily accessed in short time, allowing a day trip into the Eternal City.

This monastery is operated by the Oblati di Maria Vergine.Sitting high up above Lake Albano, the relaxing gardens offer spectacular views across the lake all the way to Castel Gandolfo and the city centre of Rocca di Papa.

I was expecting an atmospheric old Italian monastery with views over Lake Albano. This is a modern spiritual convention centre - bland, soulless, sterile, enormous. No sign of any monks or nuns. The lake is invisible. We left after one night, cutting our stay short. |

More of a retreat center than a monastery. There was no good public access to the monastery. Once at the monastery, the surrounding roads were not pedestrian friendly so, aside from the monastery grounds, we could not enjoy surrounding towns without difficulty. Only if they had private transportation. |
