Istituto Mater Ecclesiae is an ideally located and beautifully presented guest house offering warm and friendly hospitality. A true experience in Italy's capital.
Well located to all the sites of central Rome, near the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo.
Rated 4.5 out of 5
It was very enjoyable. The Sisters and lay staff from several different nationalities were friendly and welcoming and despite most of them not speaking much Englsh they went out of their way to ensure that I was comfortable. They took the trouble to use Google translate on their phone if necessary to make sure my questions were answered. On arrival I was shown to my room and also shown the common sitting area and the breakfast room and it was explained where the chapel was located. There was a genuine spiritual atmosphere discernable throughout the building.
A lovely guest house, presenting magnificently restored guest areas over several floors. Modern good sized rooms and common areas are all beautifully maintained.
Mass is held at 7:00am.
Breakfast is included in the price. There are many dining options within walking distance of the venue.

God bless the sisters!! Thanks for all.
Miguel - , Portugal (June 2024)
The rooms were clean and pleasant, the sisters were lovely and welcoming, and I had a wonderful experience. It's about a 15 minute from the Vatican.
Julia - PA, United States (May 2024)
Lovely, central place and very welcoming.
Annette - QLD, Australia (May 2024)
The Sisters were so warm and welcoming and couldn't do enough to make us feel at home. The rooms were clean and comfortable and we were grateful to make good use of the chapel, loung area and roof terrace with our group of young pilgrims. Thank you.
Clare - , United Kingdom (April 2024)
I had the best experience here. I only gave the sleep quality an 9 because the walls are very thin so I would wake up easily at times when someone was moving around in the room next to me. The staff were wonderful. I enjoyed the location. I walked everywhere I could and then took the train and bus other times. I only needed a taxi to the airport because I ran the marathon and hurt my knee so I couldn’t walk too much with the luggage. I would stay here again and I would also recommend it to others!
Amy - MA, United States (March 2024)
The Sisters and staff were very welcoming and gracious, especially with our limited Italian. The breakfasts were delicious.
Leah - BC, Canada (May 2023)
The monastery was close to public transportation. The beds were hard and the nuns here were quieter and not as friendly as some of the other places we stayed at.
Debra C - GA, United States (May 2023)
Everyone here was so helpful and kind. 10/10
Robin - MD, USA (March 2023)
I really loved the place. The small chapel is great to start the day in prayer. Close to the vatican and train station if you want to get to central Rome. A bit uphill, so prepare for a walk (10 mins clibing) that can be a bit exhausting, especially in the hot roman summer. Small sacrifice for a good resting place.

I totally enjoyed my stay. Sisters and staff are very friendly. Room is clean. Breakfast is nice. Very close to the Vatican and public transport.
Angela - WA, Australia (April 2019)
At Casa Mater Ecclesiae, I enjoyed the hospitality and kindness of the sisters and the staff above all. The location is convenient for spending plenty of time at the Vatican, which is about a 15 minute walk away. I was glad to have a friend drop me off and pick me up when arriving and leaving; walking up and down the hill with luggage would have been a little challenging. The wi-fi worked well in the room, and the breakfast was very enjoyable.
Nicholas - IA, United States (January 2019)
Thanks for everything. All was great.
Sidia - NY, United States (May 2018)
Great place. Very handy for the Vatican. The proximity of Station San Pietro makes transport to and from the airport very easy. The Sisters were lovely, very hospitable. It certainly helped that my husband speaks Italian. Noisy early in the morning with people beginning to move from about 6/6.30 but very quiet at night.
Bairbre - Donegal, Ireland (April 2016)
Very good!
Patricia - OH, United States (October 2015)
This Teatine Sisters were wonderful. I have nothing but positive things to say about them.
Trinity - NJ, United States (September 2015)
This is the 2nd time that we stayed in the Convent. The nuns are very nice and friendly. The location is so convenient to the Vatican.
Elda - SC, United States (April 2015)
The sisters were very friendly and always going out of their way to help even if they didn't understand us (language-wise). Very clean and quiet at a good location a few blocks from the Vatican. The train, bus stops, and restaurants are just a few blocks away too. Morning breakfast was adequate.
Greg - CO, United States (October 2014)
The sisters tried to be very helpful but it was hard as there was a language barrier. . Everything was exceptionally clean.
Terese - IL, United States (October 2014)
We would have liked to have a fan in the room,it was muggy at night and a little uncomfortable. The neighbors of the building next to the convent were loud and we could hear them clearly at night.
Monica - NJ, United States (October 2014)
Loved being here!! Great location for walking or taking the metro - subway stop is just down the street. It was a great place and I have already recommended it to friends.
Kimberly - AE, United States (October 2014)

Peter - Victoria, Australia (September 2014)
We had a great stay, everybody was very nice and the rooms very clean. We highly recommend the place and we'll go back if in Vatican.
Beatrice - Quebec, Canada (June 2014)
We had a lovely stay here. The sisters were very sweet and helpful and the rooms were simple but comfortable with full air conditioning and high speed internet. In fact, all three of us would use our iPads to listen to the radio and watch internet tv with no problems. We were close to Vatican city which was very convenient but next time, I would stay closer to the middle of the city. Still, there is a bus that runs every 20 minutes or so, ending in Roma Termini and on the way to the bus stop, there was a local bar/restaurant that served food which was a nice getaway place from all the tourist traps. Breakfast was provided - juice, coffee/tea, cereal, buns, cheese and cold cuts. We would totally recommend this place. We wanted a simple, clean and inexpensive place while staying 5 nights in Rome and this place fully delivered.
Marguerite - British Columbia, Canada (June 2014)
I really enjoyed my stay. My only criticism would be that the sound proofing is very poor. You could hear people in other rooms when they were just speaking at a normal volume.
Rosemarie - Greater Manchester, United Kingdom (May 2014)
We were a group of 12 on pilgrimage to Rome and the convent was the perfect place to stay. The Sisters were friendly and helpful. The location was great, so close to St Peters that each day ended with a walk through the square back to our convent.
Michelle - British Columbia, Canada (July 2013)
The nuns are excellent, always trying to help the tourist. They are very, very friendly and speak Spanish, something very useful for a Latin-American like me.
Cristina - Buenos Aires, Argentina (May 2013)
Very pleasant and friendly. It would be helpful if they would accept card payments rather than cash only.
Judith Anne - North Yorkshire, United Kingdom (October 2011)
Friendly staff; very comfortable accomodations a bit hard to find
