Rated 4.6 out of 5
The sisters and thier surrogates running Casa Elisabetta were kind, professional, committed, interested and humane people, who cared about our experience there. It is a beautiful, tranquil setting, an oasis of relative quiet in a busy, central location convenient to the Termini train station, in between the British and French Embassies. Beautiful garden area with pebbled pathways. 15 min walk to Via Veneto, the Quirinale, Via del Corso, the Borghese Gardens. Young kids day camp on site but separate from lodging area..seminary students sharing the space too, but barely visible. A lovely stay.
This convent is operated by the Ancelle del Sacro Cuore .
Perfectly maintained gardens for relaxing after a day in the city.
The playground at the lodging will ensure younger children are entertained while staying here.
Breakfast is included in the price. There are cafe and dining options withing walking distance of the guest house.

Genevieve - QC, Canada (May 2024)
Great welcoming. Excellent facilities and service
Maria J. - PR, United States (May 2024)
Though my room was on a busy street and there was continually traffic noise, its location is excellant. walking distance to Termini, close to bus stops. The sisters, though communication (as I am English spoken only) was difficult, the messages got through. They were very friendly and obliging. I am very pleased I had this experience.
Dianne - QLD, Australia (May 2024)
Great location. Lots of nice places nearby. Great restaurants. The sisters are very kind and helpful. A nice oasis from the city.
John - MA, United States (October 2022)
Our stay was wonderful! We had easy access to the metro and restaurants. Also, the monastery was so peaceful after a long day of sightseeing! Finally, the people were absolutely wonderful!
Kathryn - MN, United States (June 2022)
The hostess was very nice and friendly. She didn't speek english but we managed well anyway. The place is peaceful with a nice garden outside. Close to Casa Caterina Volpicelli there is local bus stops to take you down to the center of Rome or you can just walk. And there is also a very nice market close to the Monastery where you can by fresh local food.
Heine - , Norway (December 2019)
Was great location and friendly staff.
Donald - , United Kingdom (October 2019)
Excellent facilities, very friendly and welcoming Sisters. Great location. Loved this place & would definitely stay again.
Catherine - New South Wales, Australia (September 2019)
Excellent accommodation with a very friendly welcome throughout our time there. Would definitely stay again.
Anne - , United Kingdom (September 2019)
Marta the sister whom we dealt with was delightful. So friendly and helpful and welcoming. Perfect location only 15 min walk to centre of Rome. Felt very secure and safe there. Lovely gardens to sit and relax. Kitchen for cooking and guest fridge to store food, so saves money as you can cook your own meals. Marta made me my first ever espresso! Bellissimo! As we stayed for a week they also let us use their laundry to wash our clothes. We met other travellers in the dining room and learned lots of tips and travel advice from them. We stayed in 5 different convents/monasteries during our Italy trip and this was our favourite. I cannot rate it highly enough. No complaints about anything at all.
Julia - Queensland, Australia (June 2019)
The sisters were really nice and helpful. All in all we had a great stay.
We found breakfast a little on the frugal side.
Charlotte - , Netherlands (April 2019)
I really enjoyed and appreciated my stay at Casa Caterina Volpicelli. The room had the fit and finish of a hotel room, which surpassed my expectations. It was easy to come and go, and the neighborhood felt safe and secure (a number of financial institutions and embassies are close by.) The wi-fi worked very well, the breakfast was convenient, and it was only a 15 minute walk from Termini. Recommended!
Nicholas - IA, United States (January 2019)
One of the sisters made sure I got a taxi before 7 am in the morning and waited outside with me until it arrived. She was very kind.
Sara - CA, United States (October 2018)
Very friendly. Only Italian speaking
Hubertus - , Netherlands (October 2018)
It was great. Very clean, comfortable shower and had 3 bed options! Travelled alone, but felt very safe and had a key to my own room and access code to get in and out whenever I pleased. Relatively far from the main points of Rome, but not too far for what I ended up seeing. Good price - perhaps Rome is just expensive to begin with though. A more authentic feel though; with it meant though they don't speak a lot of English. Very nice though. A bit hard to get luggage there because they had a gravel walkway leading to the living quarters. Would go again though if it were more affordable for a traveling study abroad student!
Madeline - LA, United States (September 2018)
Marta is a very gracious host. Her english is not strong but she is taking a class to learn better english. She mentioned my first night that the room might be noisy since it faced Via Venti Settembre and she could put me in another room the next night if I preferred. She was right about the noise so I changed rooms with no problems. The location is near a bus stop. As I arrived the first night, there was a free concert happening at the museum across the street. It is not too near the tourist sites but not a bad location. There are many embassies in the area.
Thomas - CA, United States (September 2018)
Enjoyed my stay. It was clean and comfortable and the Sisters are very friendly and accommodating. I would stay there again. The only other thing I would have preferred to have a mini-fridge but not a deal breaker.
Antonio - ON, Canada (September 2018)
Marta made us feel very comfortable and we enjoyed our stay very much. The room was simple and clean and the Casa's gardens were attractive and provided a restful environ to relax in.
Noel - London, United Kingdom (September 2018)
We have recommended this convent to our travel agent for others. We will certainly use this type of accomodations. Thank you
Daniel - mi, USA (August 2018)
It is extremely clean, well located and the quietness was perfect to rest. Thanks to the Sisters for such a wonderful stay.
Patricia - MADRID, Spain (March 2018)
Pleasant, thoughtful, a meaningful experience.
J G - IL, United States (December 2017)
A wonderful peaceful place to stay in the heart of Rome. Lovely accommodation and very welcoming and friendly staff. The gardens were lovely to sit in and the whole experience was very memorable. Would highly recommend.
James - VIC, Australia (October 2017)
Beautiful and convenient location.
English difficult so we practised our Italian. Very friendly and helpful
No tea and coffee facilities available during the day - this was a bit unexpected especially with the 'Australian' expectation.
Anne - NSW, Australia (April 2017)
I cannot overstate how friendly they were here.
They do not speak English, but were very encouraging of my Italian attempts and we managed to communicate very nicely.
Every night on our return, we were greeted at the gate and asked how our day went and what we had done.
And on our last day, they made a point of coming out to wish us safe journeys and say goodbye.
A wonderful house and garden, very quite when we went.
It was very special.
Peter - Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom (July 2016)
Great location close to amenities, size of the room was a pleasant change to the small hotel rooms we have been staying in. Added bonus of the gardens were a great escape in a busy city. The site made you feel very safe. The nuns were very helpful.
Frank - QLD, Australia (June 2016)
We were thrilled with our stay! The facilities were great and Sister was so nice to our daughter. We felt truly welcomed and would eagerly recommend this convent to our friends and family!
Miranda - PA, United States (April 2016)
A little difficult to find.
Beautiful garden cozy room clean comfortable
Donna - CA, United States (September 2015)
The staff (Sisters)were most helpful and supportive.
John - Queensland, Australia (September 2015)
The nuns were very sweet and concerned about our well being. We had an early tour one morning and they insisted on getting breakfast for us an hour before the normal time so we could eat.
Nancy - OH, United States (June 2015)
Wonderful place to relax in Rome. The sisters were friendly and welcoming, would stay here again.
Laura - OR, United States (May 2015)
Our room for four adults was very large and comfortable. Bathroom appeared to be newly renovated. Either that or they do a such a great job of cleaning that it looks brand new! Our room faced the street, but noise was never an issue. The thick-paned shutter windows (which appeared to be new) were excellent at blocking out what little street noise there was. Continental breakfast was very filling because they give you quite a variety of items.
Hector - CA, United States (May 2015)
Fantastico! I would go to casa Caterina Volpicelli again.
Paul A - Ontario, Canada (May 2015)
The nuns were so friendly and pleasant! The grounds are beautiful! Close to bus line that goes to the Vatican. 10 minutes, maybe, to the train station. Some may be put off by the 22:30 curfew, but we were exhausted and ready for bed before then. The rooms were spacious and simply, but nicely decorated. I will stay here again!
Tracie - , Switzerland (October 2014)
Excellent location once you acquainted yourself with the subway system. Contact person (Soolay) was very pleasant to deal with although her English was very limited.
Robert - MA, United States (September 2014)
Really enjoyable, sister Emma was very kind and helpful.
David - Alberta, Canada (August 2014)
It was lovely and perfect for our needs.
Shari - NY, United States (June 2014)
We, my husband and 2 children had a great time during our 4 day stay. Sister Emma made sure we got to know the basics of getting around. Every morning she would give us the most helpful advice on what to do and see in the areas we were planning to go. She is such a lovely person. She only spoke Italian and we only spoke English but we understood each other perfectly!
The place is very clean. A beautiful garden. The breakfast was more than enough with great coffee. Getting around was easy with many buses passing by this place.
I would definitely stay there again and recommend to others.
Prabhaharan - KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (June 2014)
Currently sister Emma has a tablet for translating Italian to English. Very friendly and as nice as always.
Hanny - , Netherlands (June 2014)
Superb hospitality and welcoming spirit of a family, catering to each guest's every need. Even toanticipating our needs. Sister Emma is more than guest coordinator, she emotes the warmest personality and the kindest heart to her guests. Returning to her welcoming friendship was as much a highlight of our 8 days, as the Ancient ruins and monuments! The estate grounds and our most affable Emma were a refreshing respite after an exhausting day on ancient Roman stone walkways and roads. Casa Volpicelli became a second for us. Don't miss out on Sister Emma's spot on nearby ristorante recommendation to ensure you are not only eating "the best best" authentic Roman cuisine at a reasonable price, but also become part of the neighborhood Roman people -- and Sister's neighborhood gelati shoppe is also "the best". 5 star rating from this family. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Rome, and this from a couple on their very first monastery stay!
Aubert - PA, United States (May 2014)
The nuns were lovely. Room was large and very clean, window was opaque, no view. Location is great. Breakfast is simple.
Douglas - Queensland, Australia (May 2014)
We used taxi and bus to get to and from this location. It is conveniently located along a bus line that takes you into the heart of Rome. We also walked around the area often as there are shops and restaurants very near. Sister Emma was very accommodating and supportive of all our needs. Google Translate came in handy to communicate with her.
Timothy - IA, United States (April 2014)
Our stay at Casa Caterina Volpicelli was excellent! The Sister in charge of hospitality made us feel like one of the family, even greeting us whenever we returned from our outings. She was very helpful in making sure we had everything we needed, answering all of our questions, and making recommendations. She helped us figure out which buses to take, pointed out the friendliest neighborhood restaurants, etc. Sister only speaks Italian, but she's very creative in helping you understand her - of course, we also speak Spanish, so that did help us quite a bit. The room was just what we were looking for - clean, comfortable and quiet. You won't find a TV, radio or telephone, but wifi is available is you need it. Each morning, each table was stocked with ample amounts of toasts, breads, juice, cappuccino, hot chocolate (for our son), jams, and most importantly (again, for our son) Nutella!
We were sad to leave and can't wait to go back!
Thank you Monastery Stays for the arrangements, as well as answering all our questions patiently and quickly. We're already recommending you and Casa Caterina Volpicelli to our friends!
Melissa - VA, United States (April 2014)
The rooms were very clean and cozy. Sister Emma was very nice, friendly and helpful.
Freddy - Kerala, India (April 2014)
This was a lovely stay - Sister who greated me was very helpful in information needed, what to see, where to catch bus, etc. She could not speak English nor I speak Italian but I understood most of what she communicated and if I didn't, she would visually walk me through the information (took me to corner to show me bus stop). The grounds were lovely and my room was huge and very clean.
Mary Cay - TN, United States (April 2014)
Sister Emma was a very gracious host, always considering what we need.
Norberto - Metro Manila, Philippines (April 2014)
Casa Caterina was a little oasis for us. We are a family of 5 with three young children. We had been travelling for a couple of weeks prior to arriving in Rome and to have a place with a large beautiful garden and a playground for the children very close to the centre of Rome was wonderful. The Sisters were very kind and generous and the room with a double bed and three single beds was perfect for us. Thank you.
Margaret - Australian Capital Territory, Australia (April 2014)
Location is excellent for historical Rome. For Vatican you have to take a Taxi of public transportation. Public transportation was not all that fun with our 4 kids but we did do it a couple times. Taxi to the Vatican is reasonable though with a group of 6 like we had.
Royce - , Netherlands (December 2013)
Superb stay. Located at the Porta Pia (a major landmark for taxi drivers), it was easy to find and to get back to at the end of the day. Very close to the Train Station, the Bus Terminal, The Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, and several good restaurants.
The guest house was secure, nearly noise free, clean and well hosted at â…“ the cost of a hotel in the heart of Rome.
Sister was an animated, attentive, and expressive hostess. She didn't speak much English, and we not much Italian, but she gave us a patient good humored map walk through, complete with bus numbers and routes and tips (like go here and walk down the Spanish Steps, not here and walk up).
Serious matters (like ensuring a Taxi for 0330 departure for the Airport) we communicated via my iPad and Google Translate (excellent free wifi). She arranged it all and was up to see us off and ensure that it everything went smoothly.
Our two rooms were very large, well appointed, high ceiling, with individual room AC/heater. Like all the Stays we've visited, there are not televisions or radios, which is fine by us. Beds were comfortable with fresh linen. Bathrooms were individual: with a foot wash, shower, sink, and toilet.
Curfew was strict, mostly because guests have to be buzzed in the outer gates by someone inside. However, we were beat from all the touring well before so this was not a problem for us.
It was part of the charm and adventure of Rome. A bit of patience and an open attitude carried us a good ways, and Sister met us more than half way.
Rick - VA, United States (November 2013)
Only positive. The staff was very kind, helpful and we were very welcome, during the whole week!
NH - , Netherlands (October 2013)
We felt well taken care of during our stay; Our host was very pleasant, however she did not speak any English, nor do we speak ANY Italian! The grounds were absolutely beautiful and the facility was VERY clean and organized. The Chapel was breathtaking!!
James - TN, United States (October 2013)
The surrounding grounds were beautiful and peaceful. Sorella Emma was a delight; very helpful, attentive, and a patient teacher.
Joseph - OH, United States (September 2013)
The room was good-sized and very clean. The venue was charming and the grounds gorgeous. Sister Emma was very helpful with information for getting around Rome, including all the must-see churches.
Christine - NY, United States (September 2013)
Very nice and Sister Alma was very nice and welcomed us warmly. During our stay the place was quiet, clean and pleasant. We would come back and recommend it.
Jean-Marc - , France (August 2013)
I couldn't have asked for a better experience than the one my daughter and I had at Casa Caterina Volpicelli. Sister Emma was lovely, and I have NEVER stayed in a cleaner establishment. Despite its location near the Porta Pia, it was quiet and restful. Air conditioner worked great, too. I felt extremely safe and welcome here. If I find myself in Rome again, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here.
Victoria - NY, United States (July 2013)
Very quiet, good eating places at reasonable prices nearby. 15 - 20 min walk from Termini Station and buses 2 min walk away.
I only met Sister Emma and my Italian is very limited so not very good for conversations! Breakfast is all 'sweet' but usual for Italian breakfast so don't expect English type cereals etc. For me not a problem. Would recommend especially for the solo traveller.
Sally - Cheshire, United Kingdom (June 2013)
Excellent location, quiet, clean, friendly.
Brenda - TX, United States (May 2013)
I was given a friendly welcome and felt well looked after throughout my stay. The nuns were delightful and helpful: communication did not seem to be a problem even though we did not speak the same language! Breakfast was minimal but OK by me.
Ann - Devon, United Kingdom (May 2013)
This was a great choice for us. Easily walkable to the metro station but in a large park, it is quiet at night and very restful. Sister Emma was very helpful and kind. I would stay here again very happily.
Diane - WA, United States (May 2013)
Sister Hermana is very kind. She gave us a lot of good tips for our holiday in Rome. Termini station, Trevi fountain, etc. are all in walking distance. Only bad thing to mention is the traffic which is loud day and night.
Ulrich - , Germany (March 2013)
We really enjoyed our stay at the guest house. Convient location and good for kids.
Elizabeth - New South Wales, Australia (October 2012)
We were very happy with our stay. We were able to get some helpful directions using very limited English and Italian conversations. We were given maps and simple directions to the places we wanted to see. We were also given recommendations to restaurants near by. This is a very nice place to stay. It is very close to the bus route and with in a short walk to train and metro stations. This was a perfect way to start our holiday in Roma.
P M - New South Wales, Australia (October 2012)
We really enjoyed our stay in Rome. A great deal of credit goes to Sister/Hermana Emma. She helped me with my Italian every day and gave us recommendations for places to visit and what buses to take. Although the location is also a grade school, we moved freely while the children we present. We recommend this guest house to anyone who wants good clean quarters at a good rate. Hermana Emma is a real gem!
Michael - NH, United States (April 2012)
They are very nice, though do not speak English. We did manage to communicate adequately. The room was immaculate and was as advertised except that there was no hairdryer. Overall, though, a good value.
Christine - OH, United States (June 2011)
I loved it there. The grounds are beautiful and relaxing. However I have friends who would be less happy because of the light breakfast. That was something I appreciated. I also appreciated the patience of the Sisters with my rudimentary Italian language skills.
Patricia - NE, United States (June 2011)
Some rooms on the street side are quite noisy. This can be solved by letting the windows closed and using the airconditioning. In that case the noise from the street is sufficiently blocked.
sander - , Netherlands (June 2011)
It was very clean, I felt very safe, and I was welcomed by a very welcoming and friendly woman. Having said that, it was quite noisy, as the rooms are right above a main street. I suggest that people bring ear plugs! I would plan to stay here again on my next trip to Rome.
Lisa - New Brunswick, Canada (May 2011)
Sr. Emma was wonderful and most helpful and accommodating. We are most grateful for the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful garden and quiet sanctuary in the midst of Rome. Security is very good.
Helen - VA, United States (April 2011)
Great location, very clean, relaxing gardens and Sister Emma is fantastic.
Paul - Victoria, Australia (April 2011)
Friendly service with open and helpful staff.
Mark - New South Wales, Australia (April 2011)
Location, Cleanliness, Size of room, Sisters, Breakfast.
melanie - London, United Kingdom (October 2010)
The location was great, the rooms were spacious & spotless, and the hospitality offered to us by Emma (the nun) was wonderful. Breakfast was fairly meagre - we would have enjoyed a little more food and coffee. I would particularly recommend this monastery to families - the 10.30pm curfew might bother some people, but for those of us with children the curfew was fine!
Sharon - , Netherlands (June 2010)
Location. Friendly approach. quiet, secure. Breakfast was impossible, biscotties "yuck." Toast byway of bread wherein we could have inserted it in a toaster would not have been to difficult to achieve. Cornflakes or similar would have been very acceptable. No tea, only coffee. Tea bags are not expensive or difficult to provide.
Bryan - , New Zealand (May 2010)
It was a convenient location, close to the Termini train station and to the Metro stops. The staff was extremely nice. The staff and I had trouble communicating. They do not speak any English, and I did not know Italian. We managed with the help of a Translation Book.
Terri - OR, United States (October 2009)
The rooms were spacious and comfortable, the garden was glorious, we had a safe parking place for our car, everybody was very friendly and hospitable. Just one thing: breakfast was very sober.
Ingrid - , Belgium (October 2009)
Easy access on arrival and separate (from convent) entrance to rooms. Very, very clean, quiet and comfortable. A bit of difficulty because we did not speak Italian...but the sister was very good at sign language and visual aids.
Annette - NC, United States (September 2009)
I was very pleased with my choice. The room I had was large, had excellent air conditioning which was the main reason for choosing this Monastery, a small but clean bathroom with good shower. Bed was comfortable. The room was immaculately tidied each day. The garden was beautiful. As is generally the norm, it seems, in Rome the breakfast was very basic - coffee and two wrapped toast shaped "biscuits" with jam and butter. I expected this, but it may be a surprise to others. Absolutely 100% recommendation - but I'd take someone who knew more Italian! The nuns had no English and I had no Italian. She was very friendly and sign language seemed to get the essentials across.
Elizabeth - Durham, United Kingdom (June 2009)
The setting was beautiful, and the sisters were hospitable and especially the concierge who though she only spoke Italian, made every effort to make sure we understood her and offered lots of help. The location was lovely, in a convenient neighborhood to great transportation, and the hostesses were marvelous! The room was spacious, and immaculately clean, and their was a school attached which gave us a nice opportunity to see the daily pattern of children's lives. We were close to several fine neighborhood shops and restaurants. And we learned more Italian than we thought we would! The street was a major traffic artery so it was noisy at times. However I have to admit it didn't disturb my sleep at all!
