Well located to all the sites of central Rome and only a stone throw away from the Colosseum.

Beautiful place nice and friendly. Not very much of a breakfast. Only macine coffe and an vending machine with watter and choccolat donuts.
Per - , Sweden (June 2024)
It's a fabulous location with gorgeous quiet private gardens just across from the Colosseum. The monks and volunteers were wonderfully welcoming, but the "breakfast" consisted of a key to the vending machine.
Elaine - CA, United States (June 2024)
Lovely place to stay, lots of of stairs though.
Karen - SA, Australia (May 2024)
Our room was comfortable and quiet. There was a sour smell in the room that was very pungent on first entry (and each time we entered), but after being in the room for a few minutes, we didn’t notice it. We were very glad to have air conditioning! The beds were very comfortable, but the pillows could stand to be replaced. Father George, the lady at reception and the gentleman who cleaned the rooms were all very nice and helpful. Father George was even nice enough to meet us at the metro exit so we could find the location. The stairs to the monastery and our room on the top floor were killers, but it was good exercise. Having included access to the vending machine for drinks and snacks was very nice. The location was really great as well!
Tracey - TX, United States (May 2024)
It was a wonderful experience. The rooms were comfortable and clean. My new go-to place to stay!
Caroline - LA, United States (April 2024)
The host, George, was very friendly. The building is beautiful. The rooms are very quiet, so you get a good nights sleep.
Breakfast from a vending machine was a bit disappointing. Better to get Roman breakfast at one of the many trattoria :-). We were lucky that at the Circus Maximus, which is across the street, there were concerts in the evening. Lots of happpy people and good atmosphere when going back to the monastery in the evening. Walking distance from Colosseum (10 min max) and city centre is definitelly a big plus. We had a great stay!
Florence - , Netherlands (September 2022)
We liked it very much
Peter - , Netherlands (May 2022)
I loved this stay. However, was a little daunted by the steps in the beginning. After a day or two I had my walking and 'stair' legs. It was 80 steps from the street to our rooms. I would definitely stay there again. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. Beds were wonderful.
I would definitely let people know about the stairs. Didn't ask if there was a back way. I don't think they had an elevator. It was a block from the Bus stop and Metro and several great Ristorantes. Also, just down the street from the Coliseum.
Barbara - KS, United States (February 2022)
This is a lovely quiet place to stay. Not too far from historical attractions but a good stretch of the legs to get to the Vatican. Close to public transport and good restaurants. The monks were very helpful and welcoming. I would definitely go back there.
Delia - CO GALWAY, Ireland (September 2020)
Beautiful place and location. Lovely people.
tom - Western Australia, Australia (September 2019)
The monks were friendly and engaging.
Sean - , Ireland (July 2019)
Absolutely safe, quiet, and comfortable. The brothers were exceptionally nice.
Sue - GA, USA (May 2019)
The staff was lovely and the monastery is breathtakingly beautiful
I don’t think I’ve been anywhere so quiet. Thank you
Lisa - MA, United States (May 2019)
This is a very good option for budget travel, and in a stunning, central location. The room and beds were comfortable and spotlessly clean.
Katherine - ON, Canada (April 2019)
We were treated very well! Could not have asked for a better location. We are also very thankful for the opportunity to meet as a group in the informal ecumenical chapel. Thank you!
Rebecka - CO, USA (March 2019)
Part of a beautiful, historic church in a great location. Safe and secure. Less than a 5 min walk to the Metro or the Colosseum. Only drawback is no breakfast, but that is outweighed by all the other positives.
Robert - OH, United States (December 2018)
The location was fantastic and the accommodations were basic but clean and comfortable.
Veronica - NY, United States (November 2018)
It wasn't obvious where to go when you arrive. Go up the steps in the front into a courtyard. On the right side near the back, there is a door with a buzzer on it.
The location is amazing. Right by Circus Maximus and Palatine Hill.
Tiffany - OK, United States (June 2018)
It was just right for what we needed - central location, rooms excellent, very clean, everyone was really friendly, and it had wifi that worked all the time. Thank you!
Barbara - , United Kingdom (October 2017)
The brothers there were so kind and helpful. Their language skills were a bit limited, but Father George bent over backwards to make sure our stay was wonderful. I would highly recommend this monastery to anyone.
Alicia - IN, United States (December 2016)
We were made to feel very welcome, it was peaceful in the middle of the city, it's a wonderful place to stay. Altogether a pleasant stay in a very convenient location.
Loralea - Alberta, Canada (May 2016)
Interesting place for the the English to stay; ref St Augustine who was sent to England by Gregory the Great and to whom the monastery is dedicated.
David - Hampshire, United Kingdom (February 2016)
This is a historic, atmospheric monastery, in a central location between the Colliseum & Circus Maximus, & close to those two metro stations. Apart from the monastery, there is little on the street other than monuments from ancient Rome; it's very peaceful. Monastic services take place in the main church & a smaller one; white robed monks sing hymns.
The room was basic, but fine. Mine had a nice view of a monastery courtyard. Breakfast is supplied from vending machines; coffee & great croissants. There is a little roof garden towards the upper floor of bedrooms, where it's nice to have breakfast.
Very little English was spoken at reception; the introductory letter from Monastery Stays got me by.
The service was kind.
You are immersed in Rome's history in this beautiful place.
Patrick - , Ireland (December 2015)
Excellent location for visiting the Roman Imperial area.
The personnel were friendly and somewhat accommodating, but English is not their strong suite. Be aware that there are a fair number of stairs to climb with your luggage. We appreciated the fact that we had keys to the gate and door. We appreciated the fan that was in the room.
John - NC, United States (June 2015)
Our reception by Signora Loretta was excellent. She met us at the top of the steps, checked our passports and had us into our rooms in a couple of minutes, which is not what usually happens in Italy.
William - , United Kingdom (April 2015)
The monastery is an absolutely marvellous place to stay in Rome. In-midst the city and close to public transport. After having climbed the stairs you find yourself in an a peaceful, almost solemn world.
Sig.ra Loretta is a most friendly and competent hostess.
Hans - , Austria (April 2015)
Great value for any traveler. Restful sleep in good location, great fellow guests. Monasterystays made the checkin process easy with introduction letter in Italian.
Thomas - Dorset, United Kingdom (October 2014)
Good location. Rooms on fourth floor and no elevator. No breakfast and do not take credit cards.
Steven - AK, United States (October 2014)
All the staff I met were friendly and helpful, despite the language barrier.
Jack - Merseyside, United Kingdom (October 2014)
Very nice and loved that we felt safe with everything and did not worry about leaving valuables in our room. Very clean and nice shower with great towels. Will recommend this monastery to others.
Ronald - NC, United States (October 2014)
We loved staying at this monastery. It was clean, quiet, comfortable, and in a wonderful setting. The location is perfect for sightseeing, especially to the Collosseum and Forum. Bedding was great; towels a little threadbare. We were sorry that breakfast wasn't served, but knew in advance, so it was not a surprise.
Jayne - Alberta, Canada (October 2014)
People are helpful and the place is quiet. Really enjoyed the stay and will come back, also will recommend to family and friends.
Mercyditha - AZ, United States (September 2014)
We were very pleased with our accommodation, location & particularly the beautiful surroundings in the monastery. This really made our stay in Rome so nice. We are recommending Monasterystays to all our friends & in particular Monaastero di San Gregorio. Thank you.
Norbert - New South Wales, Australia (September 2014)
It was AMAZING! I was so impressed with the physical building and location, as well as the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. We only ever saw three other humans during the four days we were there, which suited us well as we were quite tired during our trip. Great stay.
Nora - VA, United States (July 2014)
Despite some language (English) difficulties, the staff were able to assist on every occasion
Ray - Victoria, Australia (June 2014)
The monestry and staff were lovely.
The position was great right next to the coloseum and some lovely restaurants.
Rooms were basic with clean facilities. Would not hesitate to stay again.
Adriana - New South Wales, Australia (May 2014)
Peaceful and clean. Excellent location, opposite Palatine Hill. Although breakfast not included, very good well priced machine for drinks and snacks.
Marian - Dorset, United Kingdom (May 2014)
Our stay at the Monastery was excellent. We expected basic accommodation but the rooms were quiet, clean and made up every day. The location was fantastic, walking distance to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, public transport and tourist Bus. The gentleman on the front desk was very helpful, even with limited English. It was quite an experience to stay in such a beautiful old building in such a great location. Highly recommend to family & friends. My husband only negative was getting the suitcases up the front steps, but just part of the experience.
Jillian - Victoria, Australia (May 2014)
It was a wonderful stay in a building of a monastery where you receive things of a Monastery: silence, peace, beauty and cordiality.
And outside of course Rome, wonderful Rome with all its sounds, traffic, beauty and a lot of things more.
Annie - , Netherlands (January 2014)
I was very happy with my stay.
Lee - Western Australia, Australia (October 2013)
Overall, our group of seven truly enjoyed our stay at Monasterio di San Gregorio, and we will probably stay at the same place again next time we visit Rome. The beds were extremely comfortable, the rooms and the bathrooms spotless, the place was very quiet so we could go to sleep early - We were a group of students of classical philology and archaeology, and spent nearly 12 hours every day walking and studying the ancient monuments.
Sophia - N/A, Greece (September 2013)
The location is wonderful. Staff friendly. No English speakers, though. Vending machine for morning coffee and roll or can walk near the Colosseum for breakfast. Very quiet and I felt safe walking alone back from dinner. Two metro stops within easy walking distance.
Mary - HI, United States (June 2013)
This is a terrific location. We were made very welcome. There is a machine for hot drinks and snacks which were quite decent and not expensive. Room was over a courtyard and very quiet. Towels and hot water all very good, beds were comfortable.
Gillian - Wiltshire, United Kingdom (May 2013)
We very much enjoyed staying at this monastery. We would attempt to stay there again on our next trip to Rome. Loved the location and the atmosphere.
Nicholas - Ontario, Canada (May 2013)
The limitation of hours can be a problem for the weary traveller, but the cell phone number is there and I understand that it is a monastery and not a hotel. Secondly, WiFi is a critical part of the travellers world in 2013 and the lack of a WiFi area at the Monastery is the only thing that would make me think twice about staying there again.
Peter - Alberta, Canada (May 2013)
The rooms were simple but clean and had everything we needed. Great water pressure in the shower! The staff was very helpful despite language barriers and even let us leave our bags locked in the room until late afternoon on the day of checkout.
Shannon - MD, United States (May 2013)
Office hours were restrictive and office was not manned during the specified times,, taxis found it hard to find, access was difficult - locked gates and lots of stairs
Barbara - Auckland, New Zealand (September 2012)
We were delighted by the accommodation, a peaceful room with a view out over the pines of Rome. Loretta was very helpful, providing us with an entry key and storing our bags after our last night's stay so we could continue to enjoy the city before going to the airport for a very late night flight.
John - New South Wales, Australia (September 2012)
Best location (only 200m from colosseum); beautiful old historic building; no breakfast; too many steps (about 76 incl the front church steps); make sure you arrive in the morning (when someone is in theoffice); room was a bit small with separate twin beds (not of same height, so couldn't put together).
Arnolda - Queensland, Australia (September 2012)
Remember to take your keys if you go out early! I left my key (you only get one) with my wife, but then got stuck between the main door and the gate!
David - OR, United States (September 2012)
Everything was wonderful.
Ian - CA, United States (July 2012)
Great location for Colosseum and Roman Forum. Surrounded mostly by historic sites and residences, so bit far from places to eat.
Vivian - DC, United States (June 2012)
If you have a good map, its easy to get to the Monastery via public transport. The metro is 5 minutes walk in one direction, the Colosseum, 5 minutes walk in the other. The perfect peaceful and central haven to visit Ancient Rome. See my blog for any further details: http://shegathersnomoss.com/?p=967
Alexandra - South Australia, Australia (June 2012)
The building is beautiful and well maintained, the people are friendly, the heating and plumbing work, etc. The gardens in the back make the place feel like it is in the woods despite the milling crowds across the street (which we didn't hear at all inside the room).
Daniel - , Germany (May 2012)
My room was on the 3rd floor and since my luggage was heavy and they had no lifts one man did help me up the stairs with my luggage for which I was grateful.
Janet - Queensland, Australia (May 2012)
Once you go through the monastery gate, the door to enter the building in on the right side of the complex. The doorbell is labeled in small lettering.
Marilyn - VA, United States (April 2012)
Really nice place to have a short stay in Rome. Rooms are simple, with renovated toilets. The room has single beds, a cupboard, desk, heating and big windows. Toilet was as big as the room, with shower, bidet and all amenities. No room service, but towels and toiletaries provided. If you have too much luggage, please advised that there are a zillion steps! No cafe in the premises, but the vending machine has soft drinks and amazing croissants for 1/2 euros! That was our breakfast every day. Highly recommended for those who are looking for reasonable, no-frills accommodation near Colosseum.
Ms. - Tamil Nadu, India (April 2012)
Perfect location very close to the Colosseum. Easy walk from the Circo Massimo metro stop. Amazing entryway and simple quiet rooms with comfortable beds. If it had wifi available for guests it would be absolutely perfect. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a clean, affordable place in central Rome.
Ken - UT, United States (March 2012)
We loved this place however getting luggage up to the rooms is difficult. There are many stairs. Mother Theresa used this monastery when she stayed in Rome. Visiting her rooms was a highlight of our trip.
Patricia - British Columbia, Canada (October 2011)
Fantastic and quiet room. Very clean and airy. No TV but that just made it even more relaxing without too much noise. Fantastic location just across from Colesseum - therefore great access to transport, tourist buses etc.
Michelle - Queensland, Australia (October 2011)
Clean, simple and friendly. Has a fan but no air conditioning -may prove difficult for some in the height of summer. Overall a great place to stay with plenty of character.
Eunice - , New Zealand (July 2011)
Not much service, but I didn't expect much - it's not a hotel. Also, there are a lot of stairs in the monastery, and no lift. OK for me, but if stairs are a problem, try elsewhere.
Gordon - Victoria, Australia (July 2011)
In general very positive. I appreciated the helpfulness of the staff and the fact we could use the church and rooftop.
Stephen - FL, United States (June 2011)
Breakfast would have been nice, otherwise a great place to stay. Incredibly convenient for metro and right opposite the forum. Very quiet and clean.
Sheila - British Columbia, Canada (May 2011)
The location is relatively near the Circo Massimo metro stop but not easy to get to. Another nearly 70 stairs if you are placed on the top floor of the guest house, as I was. For the weary traveller, getting home at night is an unwelcome ordeal. Service was rated a 5 because the trash was not taken out at all over my 7-day stay. Sleep quality was rated a 5 because the room is not air-conditioned, and to achieve a sleepable temperature, the window had to be left open. No screen on the window means bugs in the room, which means bug bites while sleeping.
Arlen - TX, United States (May 2011)
The location of this Monastery is UNSURPASSABLE in Rome. It is 200 metres from the Colosseum, and less than that to the Forum. We walked everywhere from this location. Despite being in the very centre of Rome, the Monastery is slightly off-the-main-drag, which provided some quiet. It is surrounded by large trees, which also helps. The staff were very friendly, and the facility itself is in excellent condition. The Church and chapel have beautiful artwork inside.
Jon - Alberta, Canada (May 2011)
The church was beautiful. The location was amazing and very close to the subway.
gabriel - British Columbia, Canada (April 2011)
Great location. Quiet stay. Very safe atmosphere. Accomodating staff. Clean facilities. Check-in time limitations.
Ragan - AL, United States (September 2010)
Our place in Rome could not have been more perfect. Staying in a place that was originally build during the end of the Roman Empire made the visit very special. We were close to all the history we were interested in and staying in a historic place. Amazing! We could not have asked for a better place to stay. It was old, clean, in the perfect location, safe and historically significant. It was amazing, we could not have asked for a better place.
Nancy - CA, United States (June 2010)
The history of the place was very interesting, very nice staff too.
Tegan - Western Australia, Australia (June 2010)
Staying in a place which carries so much history was very special. Good convenient location close to tourist attractions. We can no faults with our stay.
David E - Queensland, Australia (June 2010)
Quiet room, friendly non intrusive care, fantastic location.
Mark - Queensland, Australia (May 2010)
Location was relatively convenient, near subway stops. Quiet room location. Good price. Excellent hot water. Basic accommodation, but we expected that.
Michael - Nova Scotia, Canada (October 2009)
The room was attractive, the beds comfortable, the bathrooom was great and the location was stunning. Sometimes the dash to make it in before curfew!
Paula - , New Zealand (September 2009)
The guest house was clean, safe and in a great location. What is more, the staff was very kind. The only thing I can think of is that the twin beds were a bit narrow for my 6-foot-tall husband.
Joyce - NY, United States (September 2009)
It was the highlight of our trip to Rome. A beautiful building, a very comfortable spotlessly clean room, a place of peace and tranquility in a crowded, very busy city! Also a great location- easy to find when we arrived as it was so close to the Colosseum. I have already recommended it to family and friends, and would certainly use it again if I was travelling back to Rome
Roger - Tasmania, Australia (June 2009)
The location, the place, the cleanness. The peace and quiet. They don't clear your room everyday. That is fine, is just that we didn't know and first day we came back really tired and we had to fix our room.
Kyhl - TX, United States (October 2008)
Great location, more modern rooms than we thought. Customer service: place to store luggage on first floor night before leaving, book affordable transer to airport. Hard to find entrance. Too many stairs
Robert - Ontario, Canada (October 2008)
The rooms are tiny, but large enough to be comfortable in. It's location was to die for and the people were very nice. There is no air conditioning in most of Italy apparently, and they are no exception. Without reservation I would recommend it!
James - VA, United States (August 2008)
It was perfectly located, better located than any hotel. No food, but the room was very pleasant and modern. No AC, but it didn't matter as it was in April. Very friendly, well kept.
Roger - NM, United States (April 2008)
Monastery was lovely. The room was clean and well decorated. Staff ie housekeeper and the monks/priests were very kind to us. Rather spooky especially late at night we had to unlock the main gate (big and iron) then unlock the main door to the monastery.
Hilary - London, United Kingdom (April 2008)
Location, peaceful no refreshments available other than vending machine which had limited choice
Davis - Bedfordshire, United Kingdom (March 2008)
Clean, quite and nice people. the coffee machine sometimes took money but didn't provide coffee [FIXED]
