This is a lovely stay in a truly picturesque town. The charm of an ancient Roman era shines through as you explore Matera, and this monastery acts as the perfect base for this quintessential experience.
Matera is famous for its churches and beautifully historic appearance.
'Sassi di Matera' is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - an ancient city, which was one of the first known human settlements in Italy, over 9,000 years old. It is the main attraction in the town, and a stone throw away from the monastery. Experiencing Matera is as close to stepping back into ancient Roman times as possible - explore the caves and alleyways or bask in the sunshine at one of the great restaurants and take in the view - Matera is truly a fantastic experience.
The Matera Cathedral is definitely worth a visit, as well as many of the other churches in the town, including San Giovanni Battista, the church of Sant Agostino and the church of San Pietro Caveoso (to name a few).

This is a school/monastery. Once the children go home, it is very quiet, and calm. It is located just a couple of hundred meters from the main square in Matera, and you can access the sassi from there. This is an ideal location for a stay in Matera, and they even offer parking.
This convent is operated by the Suore Riparatrici del Sacro Cuore.
Throughout your stay at this guest house, you will always be able to find a spot for yourself to relax, whether it be indoors in the magnificent sitting room or outside in the gardens and the warm sun.
A transfer service can be organised for guests arriving from Bari. Contact us for more information.
The charming dining room offers lovely Italian cuisine to all guests.

Suor Maura and Suor Marina were particularly kind and patient, especially in our conversations in Italian. The location was excellent being close to the train and bus station as well as the town centre in the other direction. Breakfast the first day was pancakes along with the selection of cakes, fruit and yoghurt. It was very wet while I was there, so didn't have the opportunity to make use of the really pretty garden.
There is no where to make or get a hot drink outside breakfast hours, so next time I would take something to make tea. Suor Marina did fill my flask one evening so I had a warm drink before bed.

The nuns at Sacro Cuore were extremely welcoming. Sr Beena was the sister assigned to visitors and we were very well taken care of. The convent is running a kindergarten and primary school in addition to providing accommodation for travellers. We loved our stay here.
Gillian - VIC, Australia (October 2022)
The room was excellent, spacious, clean and modern bathroom. Istituto Sacro Cuore is a short walk to the main square of Matera. The off street parking was handy because I had a car, but I believe there is also a train station. The Sisters were very welcoming and helpful and I very much enjoyed my stay.
Paul - NSW, Australia (January 2022)
Extraordinarily clean, comfortable, centrally located and run by the warm and welcoming sisters of Sacro Cuore. Highly recommended.
William - TN, United States (August 2021)
Sister Beena and her nuns were very welcoming and helpful.
Christopher - QLD, Australia (January 2020)
I totally adore the Sisters and the place! Truly a loving place! I was greeted by all these adorable children ad their teachers as I arrived on a week day and the teacher was kind and helped me with my suitcase over the few stairs at the entrance. Sr Beena was incredibly kind and attentive. She even opened the door for me an evening in which I arrived later than my usual time as it was hard to get across the crowd after a concert in the main piazza. The breakfast was lovely and I felt so create for. I love to hear the sisters praying and chanting in the morning and walking up to the swallows flying over my window. It was an absolutely amazing experience. I hope I am so blessed that I can return one day to spend a full week or more as I love the magic of Matera, its people and its art. I feel deeply grateful!

A very pleasant stay. Simple but very good standard of accommodation. The Sisters were very helpful and most hospitable.
Kieron - QLD, Australia (June 2019)
Very pleasant and friendly staff.
Jennifer - ACT, Australia (May 2019)
Excellent guest house, good position close to the Sassi for tourists. Breakfast mainly sweet cakes, etc. but this is usual in Italy. Very quiet, I was the only one there.
Julia - Victoria, Australia (April 2019)
The sisters were very friendly and helpful, and the location was great - walking distance to the station, the sassi, and the Centro Storico. The bed was quite firm but comfy, and the room was squeaky clean.
Anne - AZ, United States (March 2019)
Sister Beena was incredible. The Institute is central to Matera, and the rooms aligned with convent expectations. Great breakfast.
Cate - CA, United States (September 2018)
be sure to ask for a hairdryer before you need it
VERY close to the center piazza, the property is only 15 or 20 min from the train station
had dinner at the property and food was very good an LARGE portions. Fruit, bread, bottled water, had a pasta, salad and great grilled beef
(no wine)
I was the ONLY guest for the 2 days I was there
Sisters are very friendly and several speak English or patiently try to understand my Italian. They run a school so on a week day you will hear children's voices...lovely garden and as soon as the gate closes you don't hear any street noise. Sisters have high security with cameras and remote locks on the gate and doors...
i didn't ask if they had fans, it was very hot in matera during my visit and it did cooled down later in the night.
I have stayed in many Italian towns/cities etc but NEVER witnessed the masses of people on Friday and Saturday for the passigiata..amazing
Eileen - GA, United States (May 2018)
The nuns were wonderful. Very friendly. Secure parking. Close to centre. Great for walking in centre.
Brian - ON, Canada (April 2018)
Very enjoyable stay. We had one evening meal at the accommodation, which was very good.
Martin - Kent, United Kingdom (July 2016)
It is nice to stay at Istituto Sacro Cuore for the trip of Matera.
Yán - Hsinchu, Taiwan (August 2015)
The sisters were very friendly and welcoming and I was treated as a special guest rather than a customer. An English-speaking sister (the excellent Sr Beena) was allocated to ensure that my stay was pleasant. I was fortunate to be able to join in the convent's feast day celebrations and I was introduced to a wonderful married couple who showed me around Matera.
