Valle D'Aosta

Valle d'Aosta is a small region tucked into the Alps in the north-west of Italy. The soaring peaks of Monte Blanco, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and a dozen other giants shelter it, giving it a mild but sunny climate.

Valle D'Aosta was a well-trod crossroad, one of the main access routes between northern and southern Europe. Hannibal marched his elephants through the region in the 3rd century BC. Generations of Roman legions also trudged through, building roads and bridges that are still visible today. For centuries, an unending stream of pilgrims trekked through on their way to Rome, braving impossible snows, exhausting altitudes and the exorbitant tolls levied by local lords. More recently, Napoleon and his armies swept through the region on their way to victory at Marengo. All of this occurred before two of the great engineering feats of our time were built - the Mont Blanc and the Great St. Bernard Tunnel.

The region capital is Aosta and hosts a myriad of ancient ruins well worth a visit.

There are also several places to see outside the capital like:

- Issogne - Host to Aosta Valley's most beautiful castle with an elegant courtyard surrounded by loggias, 15th century frescoes and fine furniture

- Saint Vincent - A great place to start a tour of the spectacular castles of the region

- Fenis Castle - Undoubtedly the region's most spectacular fortified stately home

- Gran Paradiso - Lives true to its name, 'great paradise', as a high mountain at the center of a huge Natural Park of the same name.
