Casa Papa Giovanni provides beautifully presented rooms and spaces in an historic and stunning location. Set within the walls of Assisi, it is only a short walk from the major city attractions, such as Saint Francis Basilica. A rooftop garden is a highlight for guests looking to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
This venue lies between the World Heritage listed Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi and Basilica di Santa Chiara. The Saint Francis Basilica was built after Saint Francis' canonization in 1228. It was completed in 1253 and the lower church hosts frescoes by renowned late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto. In the upper church there are frescoes of scenes in the life of Saint Francis previously ascribed to Giotto and now thought to be by artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini of Rome. The Basilica was restored after being badly damaged in 1997 when an earthquake hit the town.

This is our 2nd time staying at Casa Papa Giovanni and would highly recommend it. We look forward to staying here again!
Concepcion - FL, United States (April 2022)
I loved my stay. The staff were very friendly and kind. Part way through my stay they moved me into a larger room that had an incredible view of the valley. The location was perfect for exploring Assist.
Susan - Alberta, Canada (November 2019)
Reception, Dining-room personnel very friendly and helpful.

Such a peace.
Evelyn - NJ, United States (August 2019)
I was only to stay here for 1 week but after a couple of days decided to stay an extra week, which they were happy to accommodate. Room was adequate for my needs with a wonderful breeze from the window at the end of a hot day, not to mention 2 roof top terraces with spectacular views over the valley. Wi-fi was available everywhere and the option to have lunch, dinner or both was super convenient and great value. Felt very at home at Casa Papa Giovanni.
Lisa - VIC, Australia (July 2019)
The people who helped me were very nice. The rooms had screens on the windows, which was so helpful with all the mosquitos this time of year! Location was central to Assisi. I can't comment on the breakfast, since I didn't get up early enough to eat it. They have a nice bookstore downstairs, where you can buy postcards, books, etc.
Dana - CA, United States (July 2019)
They were amazing hosts, kind and generous! They helped us immediately when we got there with one of our students having a medical emergency and made sure we were taken care of every way while we stayed there. Thank you for creating a beautiful trip to Assisi!
Kayla Gollihar - TX, USA (March 2019)
The staff was very accommodating, pleasant and helpful. We also enjoyed meeting people from all different parts of the world and talking with them during meals. It's a great central location in Assisi with lots of places to walk to. There's so much to see, do, and experience. What a beautiful medieval town. We really enjoyed our stay.
Karen - TN, United States (October 2018)
We had a wonderful short stay here - the monastery is situated right in the heart of Assisi so very easy to walk to all the sights, shops and restaurants. We had a room with a fantastic view over the Umbrian countryside. Breakfast very good with good choices. Very comfortable if a little small rooms. Staff were very helpful- we will certainly try and return here again.
John - , United Kingdom (September 2018)
Staff very friendly and good value for money, including meals.
I did find the bedroom walls lacked sound proofing though so if you had a noisy neighbour it was important to us earplugs as beds were placed back-to-back. That is my only constructive comment. Everything else was great!
Rev. - British Columbia, Canada (September 2018)
People were very friendly and obliging; nothing was any trouble. Other guests were interesting and some good conversations were possible across languages and cultures. Homely, pleasant, clean and simple - excellent value.
Br. Peter - RM, Italy (July 2018)

The amenities were excellent.

Tom - WestMidlands, United Kingdom (May 2018)
Casa Papa Giovanni is so centrally located that it gave us easy access to all of Assisi. The staff there are more than hospitable. They made us feel right at home.
Michelle - OR, USA (April 2018)
It was a good choice.
Else-Britt - , Norway (September 2017)
A wonderful restful stay for a reasonable price. Incredible view of the valley from my window. Loved the common terraces/balconies for prayer, reading, reflecting, or just enjoying the view. Fan is a great asset in the summer to keep room comfortable. Breakfast was simple, had good variety and filling. Nice middle point and easily accessible to sacred sights, food, and shopping. San Francesco is down the hill and San Rufino/Santa Chiara is up the hill. After I had booked, a priest acquaintance studying in Rome recommended Casa Giovanni and I too recommend it to others.
Suzanne - MO, United States (July 2017)
Wonderful place, wonderful hosts. It was truly an oasis. Terraces were beautiful too!
Sarah - MN, United States (June 2017)
It was a very comfortable, beautiful space! It was lovely to pray in the chapel.
Lita - NB, Canada (June 2017)
Our group was delighted with this property. The location was ideal, the rooms - especially the rooms with views - were excellent. The outdoor spaces - terraces, garden and roof space - were much appreciated by everyone. We recommend Casa Papa Giovanni without hesitation.
Brett - London, United Kingdom (May 2017)
The hospitality could not have been better. The kitchen accommodated our late arrival and gave us a delicious supper. All the time we were there they made us feel so very much at home. The rooms were slightly thin walled. The beds were comfy, they were made for us every day. The rooms were kept wonderfully clean. Breakfast was lovely, supper when we wanted to eat in was excellent value, and served wonderfully. We felt so at home and were sorry to leave. Although our Italian was not good the hostesses (one could hardly call them staff, it was more like family) always made an effort to understand us, helped us with transport and sand paper (even sandpaper!) when required. The chapel was easy to use, and well supplied. We enjoyed the outdoor spaces for lunch and relaxing. We had such a wonderful stay that we were all very sad to go home. Thanks too for a rather early breakfast on the last day. All so very accommodating and kind.
Sarah - , United Kingdom (April 2017)
Excellent location, comfortable, immaculate. Some street noise at night with window open. Limited English spoken, but we managed with good humor. Would absolutely stay there again.
Julie - IL, United States (March 2017)
Casa Papa Giovanni is a wonderful place to stay. The staff is very welcoming, helpful and polite. It would be nice to have a sitting chair in the room.
Dwayne - IA, United States (February 2017)
I took a taxi from the railway station, but regular buses are available. The ladies were very nice and helpful. The breakfast is nice.
Since the night temperature was very warm, they furnished an electric fan. The reason why the rating for sleep quality is comparatively low is that a group of pilgrims discussed noisily at midnight in the upper terraces. They however regained there rooms immediately after I asked them to be less noisy.
Gerard - , France (July 2016)
Everything was great. Sisters were kind and helpful.
Rebecca - TX, United States (July 2016)
Great location. most of the rooms face onto the street - but there is very little traffic at night....so that was fine. Rooms clean and comfortable. Breakfast basic but plentiful. Coffee could be stronger for Australian tastes - but that is my only complaint.
Diana - New South Wales, Australia (June 2016)
We had a lovely stay. The 2 outside upper gardens were beautiful. We had an outdoor picnic at 9PM in the garden with a view of much of the Assisi area. The chapel and bookstore were added treats.
Georgia - MN, United States (April 2016)
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would recommend this to anyone.
Kathleen - CT, United States (April 2016)
Great location, beautiful place, great food and wonderful, friendly staff.
Miriam - NY, United States (December 2015)
The location was excellent and very good for getting to all the main sites in Assisi. The chapel is beautiful and a joy to have Mass there. The staff were helpful and willing to make arrangements. The views were stunning from our room.
Keith - Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom (October 2015)
Great service. We were well accommodated and warmly greeted.
Mindy - MI, United States (September 2015)
The four of us really enjoyed our stay in the excellent location.
Breakfasts were substantial and enjoyable with fresh fruit always available. Except for the first night we ordered dinner which we found to be enjoyable, satisfying and good value. The staff were always friendly, helpful and pleasant to deal with. We would certainly stay at Casa Papa Giovanni if we were fortunate to visit Assisi again.
Jennifer - KwaZulu Natal, South Africa (September 2015)
We had a wonderful stay! Sister Rita and her staff could not have been kinder to us and we feel very privileged to have been able to stay in such a beautiful place.
Janet - , United Kingdom (September 2015)
Rita is very helpful and we love the place a lot.
Wee Yin - , Singapore (July 2015)
Hardly anyone spoke English, but they were lovely and helpful and willing to play the guess what each other is saying game. The views are wonderful and the roof garden is amazing. The views from my room were phenomenal. I wish I could have stayed longer. The location at the top of a hill made fan cooling more than enough even at the end of June. And there were screens on the windows- no mosquitoes!
Ellen - OH, United States (June 2015)
We had a lovely stay here while in Assisi. Our room was bare, but clean and safe. It had all the things we needed. Assisi is not a large town and this was a fairly central location. 10:30 curfew was never an issue. Would stay here again on future travels.
Linda K - GA, United States (April 2015)
Casa Papa Giovanni was an excellent place to stay. I liked the simplicity of the place. Most of all, I appreciated the warm friendliness of those providing the hospitality. The staff were most supportive and helpful.
Judith - New South Wales, Australia (February 2015)
You can't beat the location of Casa Papa Giovanni!! Rooms are clean and very basic (what you would expect in a monastery) and staff is helpful. Quiet sleeping at night. Only improvement would be to improve towel quality; they are very rough.
Jean - MD, United States (October 2014)
The views from the rooms are fantastic.
J C W - Oxfordshire, United Kingdom (September 2014)
Wonderful, friendly staff and very welcoming atmosphere.
Margaret - OH, United States (September 2014)
This was my 3rd or 4th stay at Casa Papa Giovanni. It is a super value for the money, right in the heart of old Assisi. My room had a beautiful view of the valley and was most adequate; I wasn't looking for the Ritz! The staff is friendly and helpful. The optional main meal at 1:00 (pranzo) was tasty and nicely prepared, and the glass of wine made it festive as well. I definitely recommend the Casa to any and all.
Dennis - WI, United States (July 2014)
What a gorgeous view from the upper terrace! Nice quiet street, sweet staff members and good breakfasts. Just up the street from the main piazza and the Basilica, though a long way from the bus-stop (be sure to get the "C" bus to Piazza Matteotti when coming, and give yourself 20-30 minutes to get to the Pza. San Pietro stop when leaving). No A/C but the fans pretty much did the job, and then the rain cooled things off. They gave us nice "cestina" breakfasts on request, when we had to leave on an early train. Charming place!
Kate - TX, United States (July 2014)
Wonderful location! Great and helpful staff.
Kimberly - OH, United States (June 2014)
Overall a winner. Incredible view from my room. Best value for what you get. Early curfew however at 10:30pm
Anthony - British Columbia, Canada (June 2014)
Good location, comfortable beds, clean, great view from front bedrooms. The available evening meals (with wine) are simple Cucina Italiano at its delicious best and for an unbeatable price in Assisi. Highly recommended.
Wynston - , New Zealand (May 2014)
Excellent three-course meals with wine were incredible value - simple delicious home-style food that was satisfying and healthy as well. Beautiful quiet roof garden.
Margaret - New South Wales, Australia (September 2012)
Great place.
Donald - Highland, United Kingdom (July 2011)
All amazing! I cannot wait to stay again in the future!
Carlos - TX, United States (July 2011)
Our stay was very good!
Ante - , Sweden (April 2011)
Excellent location, very friendly staff.
Robert - NY, United States (February 2011)
Spotless. A huge advantage not to pay a single room supplement. The food was simple, fresh and ideal for those who are on a pilgrimage. Beautifully served by a small, hardworking staff. I can not fault it.
Harriet Nina - Essex, United Kingdom (October 2008)
Totally clean and quiet (though we were told there are usually more people staying). Very nice Sister as our host. Nice view.
