Istituto Suore Francescane Angeline is an historic guest house in a stunning location, offering wide panoramic views of Assisi. While guests can admire the chapel's history and the period style cloisters, a modern interior gives guests all of the modern comforts of today.
This convent is located only a short walk to the World Heritage listed Basilica of St Francis as well as other attractions in Assisi's historic center. The Saint Francis Basilica was built after his canonization in 1228, and completed in 1253. The lower church hosts frescoes by renowned late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto. In the upper church there are frescoes of scenes in the life of Saint Francis previously ascribed to Giotto and now thought to be by artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini of Rome. The Basilica was restored after being badly damaged in 1997 when an earthquake hit the town.

Customer Reviews
Excellent stay and excellent location! Right next to the Basilica of St. Francis!
Joshua - TX, United States (June 2024)
The accommodation was quiet yet convenient to the city centre and the places I wanted to visit. The sisters were all very kind and friendly. The breakfast was adequate but maybe could have included a variety of fresh fruit. I would gladly stay here again. Thank you to the sisters for making my stay a pleasant one!
Kelly - CO CLARE, Ireland (May 2024)
I had a lovely time at this guest house. The views, the chapel, the sisters were all wonderful. If you plan to spend a lot of time at St. Francis' Basilica, this location is great. Across the street is a restaurant (La Terrazza?) with a phenomenal view of the valley. The sister that was working reception when I arrived spoke little English (and I spoke even less Italian), but she was very patient with me and we got things figured out!
Audrey - OK, United States (November 2019)
Quiet situated and I had a great view from my 2 windows! Possibility of one other good meal (best in silence!) had been for me (as on individual retreat), more practical. But in general: great place to be!
Paul - , Belgium (September 2019)
This is a beautiful place to stay, at a terrific price. The view from the windows was absolutely stunning. The sisters were very kind about giving us access to the Chapel for daily Mass with the priest who accompanied us. Of course, this had to be done outside of their regular prayer time. Access to the rest of Assisi was very easy. I would never want to miss the opportunity to visit there. This place was terrific. I would use it again in a heartbeat. The pictures on their website do not bespeak the quality of the stay. It's even better!
Hank - MO, USA (June 2018)
We had a lovely time. Some of the rooms have amazing views. We used the beautiful chapel for morning and evening prayer. Breakfast and dinner were, as advertised, fairly basic but perfectly adequate and there was wine with dinner. It was much easier than eating out with a large group. The location was excellent, just five minutes from the Basillica yet also so peaceful. We also made use of the lounge each evening.
Wendy - Hertfordshire, United Kingdom (May 2018)
The sisters were very nice to us, especially since we booked two rooms by mistake.
Warren - WI, United States (October 2017)
What a beautiful chapel!
Catherine - PA, United States (June 2017)
Quiet, comfortable and my room had a most wonderful view towards S Maria degli Angeli. The coffee machine dispensed excellent coffee for our breakfast and the Sisters were kind and sent us on our way with the assurance of their prayers.
Eleanor - Kent, United Kingdom (March 2017)
The monastery was a perfect place to stay. The sisters were so kind. I speak Italian so there was no communication issue. The experience was great. The location is simply superb.
There is no airco, but we knew that before we booked the room. But it can be hot in summertime.
I would definitely return to this monastery again. The experience was great.
Ria - , Belgium (August 2016)
This place is very conducive for retreats with easy access to all the churches and other interesting areas.
Sophia - , Singapore (July 2016)
This was a wonderful stay and I would love to come back and will definitely recommend it to anyone. The location was great for getting to daily evening Mass at the Bascillica of St. Francis and the on site chapel is a place of prayer and peace. A beautiful way to spend time in Assisi.
Katherine - WA, United States (July 2016)
Lovely place with a beautiful chapel. Sisters were very friendly. I had a panorama view through the window from my room. I will definitely stay here again next time!
Ito - , Japan (July 2016)
It was such a special way to experience Assisi, staying in one of the original residences of the city. Being so beautifully kept made it an absolute pleasure.
Sarah - New South Wales, Australia (November 2015)
This was a lovely stay in a beautiful situation. The peace and serenity of the convent and gardens were wonderful. The nuns were delightful and helpful during our visit.
Christine - Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom (May 2015)
We really enjoy our short stay at this convent. Although they spoke little English, the sisters were most helpful and friendly.
Marie - Ontario, Canada (October 2014)
Excellent
Peter - Victoria, Australia (October 2014)
Everything was fine, but would have preferred a better view. But not much to do about that except maybe asking for a different room Next time. I loved the church and the view from the garden.
Johanne Warberg - , Denmark (September 2014)
I was very happy with my stay. Warning for late risers though, breakfast is at 8:30!
Jennifer - , United Kingdom (April 2014)
A beautiful place run by lovely, friendly people. If you have a lot of luggage, don't walk up from the bus stop as it a big uphill walk! Fantastic views from my room, modern bathroom facilities, nice breakfast, spotlessly clean. It was a little cold in my room one night but the rest of the time it was terrific. Thanks to the sisters for a very nice stay.
Kathleen - New South Wales, Australia (March 2014)
The sisters were very friendly and helpful, the location was great, we loved the garden and the cat.
Kathleen - OR, United States (October 2013)
What a lovely, peaceful place to stay while seeing one of the most beautiful, and most spiritual places in all of Italy! Sister Silvana, our imperturbable hostess, was able to answer every question, solve every problem with the misbehaving wifi, and make us feel at home. Only a block or two from St. Francis' Basilica, it was an ideal location. We could not have asked for more.
Betty - MI, United States (September 2013)
Just amazing, we loved it.
Barbara - Victoria, Australia (August 2013)
The Sisters go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
Susan - NC, United States (July 2013)
It was very central. The rooms are small and clean. We had a good view to St. Francesco.
Mag. Thomas - , Austria (June 2013)
Amazing setting. Rooms were clean and very comfortable. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is basic but perfectly adequate. The little chapel is beautiful. We'll definitively stay there again if we're visiting Assisi.
Andrè - Queensland, Australia (May 2013)
Wifi was available for a fee but not in our rooms. The common room upstairs had a cappuccino machine, which was very good. Very quiet and peaceful place. Sister Marina was helpful, gracious and kind. Close to 3 restaurants and 5 minutes from the San Francesco Basilica.
Nancy - OR, United States (October 2012)
Sisters were kind and friendly and spoke some English and French. Weather was very hot (37C plus) but closing the windows/shutters during day and opening them at night made for a reasonable night's sleep. No trouble with mosquitoes, but we had natural repellent on. Curfew of 10.30pm meant we couldn't go to a few evening events on the rock, and the tv was very loud in the room beneath us til after 11pm. Breakfast on day 1 was fresh soft rolls, toast, jams, cream cheese, butter and choice of teas, fresh fruit. second day the buns were reheated, and day 3 bread a little stale, but all good. Very clean and lovely chapel.
Moana - , New Zealand (August 2012)
Very conveniently situated to the Basilica of St Francis. Clean room and bathroom. Toiletries and a hairdryer would have been a welcome improvement, otherwise a very pleasant say with friendly sisters!
Cheryl - Eastern Cape, South Africa (July 2012)
The location and welcome and service were excellent.
Andrew - Northland, New Zealand (July 2012)
Wonderful convent in an absolutely delightful part of Assisi! They don't provide clean towels each day and the breakfast is...well, let's just say that you'll probably want to find an additional breakfast in the village! Overall, however, this is a terrific place to relax.
Philip - WA, United States (May 2012)
The accommodations were comfortable and comparable to other Monastery Stays venues.
Vanessa - NM, United States (May 2012)
Breakfast was a bit sparse. We worried a bit about access to room keys. It did not seem to be monitored all that closely. The sisters were lovely and very helpful! Enjoyed our stay.
William - Ontario, Canada (April 2012)
Wonderful - beautiful venue, great food, good people.
Deborah - FL, United States (October 2011)
Beautiful chapel and surroundings. Room clean with everything you need. Staff very friendly and helpful! Breakfast included. Had dinner here as well. Very pleased with our choice to stay here. It is beautiful and exactly what we were looking for. Basilica is just around the corner, no difficulty walking. Walked to all sites around Assisi. Great choice!
Cara - GA, United States (October 2011)
This was my favorite place on our Italy trip. The nuns were so nice that I was a bit sad when we left.
Evelyn - Western Australia, Australia (September 2011)
Absolutely delightful.
Margaret - fife, United Kingdom (September 2011)
Granted, it was outrageously hot when we were there, which is not under control of the sisters, but the sleep quality was low because windows were open, it was still hot. Breakfast was a bit on the thin side too. The sisters are great. Very very friendly and helpful and loved to have our two older teens around. The buildings are immaculate and in great condition with new windows and shutters, very well decorated rooms (albeit simply in the style of a monastery of course) and well appointed bathrooms.
Bernie - British Columbia, Canada (July 2011)
One of the very best accommodations I've ever had in my many years of travel. The hospitality, cleanliness and helpfulness were outstanding. The convent is a lovely place in a perfect location. I spent one week there and enjoyed my stay immensely.
Bruce - Ontario, Canada (July 2011)
Peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately weather was hot - couldn't open windows as there were no screens to keep out insects.
Anne - MA, United States (June 2011)
The parking was difficult to find. I would recommend that visitors plan to just use an overnight bag for this stay. The reserved parking was a bit of a walk uphill. Better to visit via train and bus.
Dee - WA, United States (May 2011)
We love the place, it is beautiful, the sisters were wonderful and friendly. Would definitely recommend others!!! May come back again. God willing.
Ana - , Singapore (April 2011)
It was, clean, safe and had a great location and priced reasonably. It was hard to communicate with the nuns, not one spoke English. So we were very limited in understanding what they were trying to explain to us and also we had questions for them that they could not answer. The breakfast was very scarce.
Nancy - OH, United States (September 2010)
Very friendly staff that did all their best! Nice, clean and comfortable room with own bath. Very peaceful.
Odd - , Norway (September 2010)
We didn't really have any particular expectations - just open and curious to have the experience of staying in a convent in Assisi. The room was clean and the bathroom facilities very good. We were free to come and go as we chose up to the curfew at 11pm, and we had a beautiful view over the valley from our bedroom. The breakfast was uninspiring - stale bread and jam! There were no facilities to make a hot drink - a water heater or kettle would have been much appreciated. The position was very good for exploring the area, and the price was reasonable.
Jane - Dorset, United Kingdom (September 2010)
The kindness of the sisters, spacious and quiet buildings, clean tidy room, affordable. One of the nuns was quite disdainful towards me because I did not want to take the breakfast they offered because of special diet requirements.
Bianca - Victoria, Australia (August 2010)
It was so nice to be made to feel so welcomed. The rooms were more than comfortable and I loved the hot shower. The environment was perfect for reflection and meditation. It was in such a good location. A place where you met such devote Christians. We stayed four days but could have stayed longer. The noise at night due to some neighbours was the only blemish.
David - Victoria, Australia (August 2010)
As I expected we were treated with kindness and we loved the location. As we expected the welcome was very warm. Of course a curfew at 11 pm is a bit early but it is not really a problem. Monasteries are always comfortable and the welcome always pleasant.
maxime - Quebec, Canada (June 2010)
1. Proximity to religious sites
2. Cost
3. Meals
Daniel N - MN, United States (May 2010)
Interactions with the nuns were exceptionally pleasant. The rooms were comfortable and quiet. The chance to meditate in the chapel was greatly appreciated.
Kevin - MA, United States (April 2010)
Although very friendly, and the room was much bigger than I expected and was very comfortable, it did create some difficulties that none of the nuns spoke English. The nuns were very friendly and accommodating.
Stephen - Western Australia, Australia (October 2009)
Location, Cleanliness, and kindness of the nuns. Also a great sense of security. Everything was great.
Anne - IL, United States (September 2009)
Cordial treatment modern space breakfast not so good the location was perfect for visiting the church where St. Francis is buried. Breakfast was not very good nor included in the price which was rather high hotel actually would be more convenient and offers greater flexibility.
Albert - , France (April 2008)
Clean, welcoming, excellent views, quiet, conveniently located. While recognising that this is not a hotel, it was somewhat surprising that only one set of towels was provided per person for a whole week. And the room was cold with no way of heating it (my friend certainly caught a cold there and the chilly room didn't help.
