I had a lovely stay, very quiet and peaceful, beautiful garden, very convenient room.
This convent is operated by the Monache Benedettine di Santa Marta.
A large countryside villa with guest lodging over several wings adjoining the main rooms and courtyard. Well presented rooms offer garden views and comfortable, modern facilities. Rooms surround courtyards and gardens open to guests.
Mass is held every day at 7:15am. Located at 20 meters from the guest house is another small building which the Sisters offer for those looking for a self-serviced Stay. Please contact us for more detail.

Customer Reviews
I had a lovely stay, very quiet and peaceful, beautiful garden, very convenient room.
L - , Netherlands (May 2019)
Very comfortable rooms and good service. Flexible with allowing us to celebrate Mass in the Chapel on our own schedule. Everything was provided except our English Missal.
The only negative is that you need transport to the centre of the city.
Fr. - ON, Canada (April 2019)
Met a lovely professor there who was so helpful to us. I think she volunteers at the monastery.
Lorna - NC, United States (April 2019)
The monastery is beautiful, quiet overlooking the beautiful vista of Florence. Although the city was packed given the Easter celebrations, we experienced the sanctuary of the monastery when we returned for dinner there and a quiet time together. Mass is offered and a chance to pray with the Sisters. It is not an hotel but a place of prayer and spiritual joy.
Sr. - RM, Italy (April 2019)
Thanks to the nuns.
Osvaldo - BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (September 2018)
A little difficult to find at first, but the sisters are very kind and helpful. They noticed that I was going to daily Mass and made a point to let me know when the time was changed. Beautiful view and lovely grounds. Overall a very nice experience.
Allison - LA, United States (September 2018)
It was lovely to hear the nuns singing in the chapel in the morning! Great views of countryside from rear of building. Breakfast was very basic but overall everyone was friendly and we enjoyed our stay.
John - , United Kingdom (September 2018)
The views from the terrace at the monastery were stunning. My room was clean and comfortable with an en suite with shower. Breakfast was self serve and was adequate. There was a vending machine for bottles of water costing 50 cent I recommend you have some change; there was also pop and some snacks.
It was lovely hearing the nuns singing each morning; you don’t see much of them but they were helpful at check in and check out and they would always greet you when passing.
Once you get used to public transport, it is easy to get the bus from the top of the street into Florence and to the train station.
Overall, I absolutely loved my stay. I stayed alone as a single female and felt totally safe. It was a welcome sanctuary away from all the tourist hustle and bustle. I would highly recommend Santa Marta and I would love to go back. I will definitely be using monastery stays again.
Sandra - , United Kingdom (June 2018)
A very quiet and comfortable stay, within easy access to centre by public transport. Recommended for serious travellers or researchers.
Elizabeth - N/A, United Kingdom (April 2018)
The position of the monastery on the edge of town is lovely, giving a taste of real Italy and not just a tourist location. The nuns are very kind, we had beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside from our windows and Santa Marta is an interesting old building.
Our bedroom and shower were clean and facilities adequate.
We had an excellent time in Florence. It is an amazing city!
Bill - , United Kingdom (October 2017)
The journey from Santa Maria Novella station was easy via ATAF 4 bus. The sisters were welcoming and the room was pleasant if somewhat warm at night. The gardens were a bonus and dinner was available if pre-booked. Breakfast was traditionally Italian with good coffee, bread and pastries. I am planning a return visit.
Sarah - Berkshire, United Kingdom (July 2017)
We spend a beautiful time and the garden it's beautiful.
Silvano - GE, Switzerland (July 2017)
On bus route number 4 in Florence, this was a lovely place to stay on a hill with Tuscan countryside behind and the city suburbs to the front. The ensuite bedroom was clean and the nuns were friendly.
Maria - Wiltshire, United Kingdom (April 2017)
Wonderful place to stay! Absolutely beautiful, stunning views, OK breakfast, the nuns were super sweet and helpful! The location is close (7 minute walk) to a public bus which comes pretty frequently (20-30 minutes). The bus takes you right to Santa Maria Novella train station and from there you can easily walk to the Duomo, etc. For the money, this place is awesome. The only downsides are that you do have to take a bus to get there and back to downtown Florence (15-20 minute bus ride) and the beds were pretty stiff. But the room was spectacular, exposed wood beams, beautiful windows with an amazing view, very quiet and clean. They even provide little things of shampoo and a wonderful smelling shower gel. Highly recommend!
Allegra - MI, United States (June 2016)
We absolutely loved staying at the Monastero di Santa Marta. I traveled with a group of American university students, another faculty member and her sister, and we needed comfortable accommodations on a budget. This place filled the bill and exceeded our expectations. The monastery is absolutely beautiful, the rooms are comfortable and attractive, and the sisters are very kind. The location is conveniently accessible by public transportation, but far enough away from the bustling city center to offer some quiet relaxation after sight-seeing. The sisters were wonderfully hospitable to us. I fully intend to stay here again, whether traveling with another university group or on my own.
Devon - MI, United States (June 2016)
Loved everything. There were enough blankets to keep us warm for sleeping. The sisters know very little English, but we had no major problems. Wonderful setting, beautiful view. Tranquillity after a hectic day in Florence.
Joanne - FL, United States (April 2016)
Amazing!
Mary - NY, United States (March 2016)
A very beautiful and restful location overlooking the hill side. Rooms were clean and had lovely wooden beam interiors. Would just say that the breakfast was very basic, and despite claiming to have internet in the rooms, wifi was only available in common rooms. Also no tea making facilities at the convent. Otherwise an extremely scenic and enjoyable stay with very helpful nuns.
Sharda - London, United Kingdom (September 2015)
Had a lovely stay. It was quiet and peaceful and the Sisters were accommodating and very welcoming. Excellent value for money for accommodation as well as meals (ate dinner there both nights).
Judith - VIC, Australia (September 2015)
The only improvement would have been air conditioning. Other than that, everything was perfect!
Kelsey - Manitoba, Canada (July 2015)
Fine!
Alex - ., Russia (June 2015)
We were well received by the monastery. Very warm and friendly people. The view from our room of the countryside with green rolling hills was absolutely beautiful. Although we had a rental car, we used public transportation our first day. A bus stop was only a short walk away from the monastery, and it was only about a 10-minute ride into the heart of Florence. We very much enjoyed our stay at this monastery and would definitely return.
Hector - CA, United States (May 2015)
This was a beautiful location with great scenery.
Marlene - AZ, United States (April 2015)
Enjoyable and peaceful environment. Found it easy to use the bus to get around town.
Sharron - NSW, Australia (October 2014)
We enjoyed our stay at Monastero Di Santa Marta. Though away from the hustle and bustle of the main city centre in Florence the bus no #4 runs every 15 mins. The breakfast buffet was basic but adequate. The Internet wifi facilities were unavailable but they are taking measures to enable them in the future. A separate key for entry/exit at any time made it quite convenient.
Nester - Karnataka, India (October 2014)
A wonderful place to stay in depending on what specific experiences one is looking for towards lodging/accommodation in Italy. My room was frugal to say the least, but the convenience of it's location to the city center (via#4 bus) had made it worthwhile an experience. I am glad for your site services.
Kiyoko - NJ, United States (May 2014)
Monastero di Santa Marta is a gem with breathtaking views. The rooms are as pictured with heated bathroom floors. No wifi or TV in the rooms but great social gathering space to dine with other travellers. For an extra fee the nuns will see to it that you are well fed with a four course meal in the evenings and a buffet style breakfast in the morning. Bus or cab is suggested especially at night as many of the streets are poorly lit.
Anita - CA, United States (October 2013)
We were pleased with the beautiful convent, the beautiful setting, and the cleanliness of the room.
Terry - GA, United States (September 2013)
The nuns we met were very welcoming. Sleep quality was affected a bit becase even though the mattress was comfortable the frames were sqeaky.
David - New South Wales, Australia (April 2012)
The monastery was a beautiful place and convenient to get to with public transport. The room was hot at night (summer) so I had to keep the bathroom window open. A couple of the nuns were nice, however we seldom saw them (some are cloistered). Overall, the breakfast was lovely and so was the scenery.
Erin - New South Wales, Australia (October 2011)
Re Location: The monastery is beautifully located in the hills but not too convenient for to-ing and fro-ing from Florence and so the 8 and not 10 which it deserves.
Patricia - , United Kingdom (June 2011)
Conveniently located at the end of an easily accessible city bus line, your posted pictures do not show the exquisite Tuscan countryside vista from every window and courtyard. Recommend the available dinners - simply prepared fresh foods - and the early hour (7:30pm) allowed for sweet sunset enjoyment on the terrace and conversation with other guests. Will surely return.
Toma - OH, United States (May 2011)
Lovely location with views from the back over the hills surrounding northern Florence. Very adequate facilities. Cost effective. Good continental breakfast with lovely home-made jam I was travelling on my own, have very limited Italian and no one there (almost) spoke Englilsh.
