I had a wonderful stay in Dec 2023. As a solo traveller, it felt safe. I was not aware that lights were off in the evening, you had to turn on the corridor lights. I was scared. lol. My room was at the end of the dark hallway. But other than that, the man at front desk (I forgot his name) was very kind. I had left my luggage at the counter after I checked out as my train was only in the evening, he also allowed me to use the dining hall to repack my luggage. The kindness and security I felt has given me confidence in doing more stays like this in italy. Grazie.
This convent is operated by the Istituto Chemin Neuf.

dewi - , Singapore (December 2023)
We enjoyed the large and beautiful rooms and also the garden where we could eat the breakfast which was simple but enough. The place was very peaceful and still close to the main railway station and many of the famous places of interest. There was also a small kitchen available for the visitors and we made our food there a couple of times. In the monastery church we could have our silent prayers and so we got a good start for the day.
Paivi - , Finland (November 2023)
Beautiful garden for eating breakfast. Spacious room where we could open windows in the evening with no bugs to worry about. Very hospitable staff. Would highly recommend staying here. It is a pretty fast walk to the Metro and to the Collaseum.
Gaylene - BC, Canada (September 2023)
A peaceful refuge in the bustle of Rome. All the team were very kind and helpful. The rooms were large and cleaned very thoroughly. The gardens were very pleasant.
Gerard - , United Kingdom (April 2023)
Everything was wonderful. Navis was a gracious host when I arrived and everyone was helpful. My room was comfortable and clean. All I could ask for. Thank you!
Cathy - BC, Canada (October 2019)
Chemin Neuf are running a very effective operation, supporting the sisters. Everyone was very nice kind and helpful. The place is beautiful and peaceful, the chapel and garden are wonderful, and the breakfast is good. I was very happy indeed to stay there.
Andrew - WestMidlands, United Kingdom (October 2019)
Our stay was everything we hoped it would be. It was a very peaceful place in the heart of a very busy metropolis. The sisters working the information desk were so helpful by answering our many questions about the city of Rome. Accommodation was very basic but everything you need. We really enjoyed the beautiful gardens after a long day of exploring Rome. The continental breakfast was basic but again all you need to get your day started. I would consider this a very unique experience and highly recommend it to friends and family.
Shannon - Ontario, Canada (September 2019)
Overall the monastery was a great place to stay as central to many areas of interest, eg. Trevi Fountain etc. Breakfast basic but filling, As there was a heat wave ( 38+ C ) at the time, no aircon/ fan in the room meant sleeping was uncomfortable. However the lovely cool garden on the 1st floor was a great retreat when required. Definitely recommended!!a
Alan - Victoria, Australia (June 2019)
We loved staying at Istituto San Giuseppe di Cluny! Everyone was gracious and helpful, and our stay was restful and peaceful—just what we needed when visiting the bustling city of Rome. It is clean, comfortable, and quiet. It’s also very close to all the sights of Rome—by walking or by public transportation. We plan to return!
Angela - WA, United States (May 2019)
It was very nice there. Thank You.
Charles - CA, United States (December 2018)
Very easy walk to monastery from Roma Termini, even with luggage. Easy walk to Colosseum and then into historic centre of Rome.
Beautiful garden area beside front desk was very relaxing to sit in. Able to get up to roof and wonderful view of Colosseum.
General reception staff on the front desk were so helpful with all issues - amazed that each of them spoke multiple languages to assist all the guests and always seemed eager to help. They were so pleasant with each encounter. I would recommend staying in this hotel and would stay here again when I return to Italy.
David - QLD, Australia (October 2018)
I had a very pleasant stay, particularly due to the kind and friendly spirit radiating from sisters and personnel. I felt welcome and safe. Thank you all so much!
Gerhard - , Germany (March 2018)
Thanks for staying in San Giuseppe di Cluny. Was a nice place to be.
J.J. - , Netherlands (June 2017)
The property is close to the Coliseum by a short walk through a park. I felt comfortable during the day walking through the park yet at night I opted for a taxi to get me back to the property. There is a strict curfew.
The interior gardens are beautiful and very relaxing and I would upload photos here as wi-fi is not available in the bedrooms.
The rooms are a nice size and the bathrooms have a shower bidet and toilet. My first room faced the exterior street with a bar. I could keep the window open for a cool breeze and hear the party or close the window and be hot. The next morning I requested a new room and it was quiet one facing a courtyard. It had a lovely little nook with a writing desk that I sat at with postcards purchased from downstairs.
Breakfast was simple with coffee, yogurt, cheese and french style bread. The ladies tell you where to sit and tidiness is priority to them.
Front desk staff are kind and helpful with navigation questions. There are steps up to check in at the front desk yet there is a small elevator if you have large bags. The front door is nondescript and on a typical urban street.
Andrea L. - MO, United States (May 2017)
Sisters and staff are all very friendly and helpful. Their garden is a treat for us to relax and unwind from the busy day visiting Rome.
Daisy - Ontario, Canada (May 2016)
The Nuns were very sweet and helpful. The Garden is beautiful and peaceful. I will stay here again if I return to Rome.
Karen - IL, United States (April 2015)
Our stay at San Giuseppe di Cluny was fantastic. The nuns were incredibly helpful and friendly, the room was large, as was the private bathroom, the courtyard garden was stunning and tranquil, and the monastery itself was absolutely beautiful. We were walking distance to the subway, the Colosseum, and many great restaurants and shops. This monastery is a gem, and we would definitely stay here again.
Kristen - NY, United States (April 2015)
Thank you to Sisters Clotilda, Annette, Lucia and to Signora Maria, Francesca, and Antonia. I have told my friends already and they are very interested. Great location: 10 minutes to the Colosseum and metro, 10 minutes to Santa Maria Maggiore, 10 minutes to St. John Lateran and Sacred Stairs. The chapel is impressive.
Dale - CA, United States (April 2015)
Very pleasant. Simple room but clean and bed very comfortable. The Nuns are charming hosts. The location is fantastic - many restaurants nearby, quiet street, close to Colisseum and all sights as well as in walking distance from Station.
Tessa - London, United Kingdom (November 2014)
This was quite different accommodation from what I had had prior to arriving in Rome, I have been travelling for two months in Italy. I really enjoyed the peace and quiet. The location was perfect as the convent is close to both the Termini train station as well as all the ancient sites and no distance to walk to the Pantheon, Spanish steps or the Villa Borghese. All the nuns spoke French as well as Italian and a few spoke English so most visitors are well covered, I enjoyed the opportunity to speak French as my Italian is very modest. The accommodation, breakfast is basic, as you would expect, but completely adequate, clean etc. The wifi worked downstairs, the water was hot, what more could one want. A completely safe and secure environment. I would certainly recommend to friends.
Gillian - Victoria, Australia (October 2014)
We enjoyed our stay at the Istituto San Giuseppe di Cluny. This is a very big monastery with several floors of rooms. We nuns are very friendly and keep a very close watch on everything that happens. They mainly speak Italian and French, though some speak English, too. The rooms were very clean, though there was no AC. Wifi was available, though it rarely worked. Breakfast was great, but was only served between 8-9.
Heidi - UT, United States (June 2014)
I would ALWAYS stay here! Large high ceilings rooms, very clean and the location is the best, safe and close to everything. The nuns are so cute.
Julitsa - WA, United States (October 2013)
This is my second time staying here. I was here back in Aug of 2006 and now in June of 2013. Perfect location! Close to everything, yet their courtyard transports you so far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Not a good fit for anyone that is looking to stay out partying in Rome due to the nightly curfew; but if you are looking to relax, enjoy beautiful surroundings with super friendly nuns...all at a great price....and with free Wi-Fi now.....this is the location for you!
Donna - CA, United States (June 2013)
Our whole group -8 persons- loved staying at this guest house. They were most hospitible, took care of our every need. The priests concelebrated Mass on Sunday-October 25.
Joseph - WI, United States (October 2012)
Everyone friendly and accommodating.
Roslyn - AZ, United States (October 2012)
Thank you to all the Nuns and staff as the room was spotless and Nuns were all very helpful especially 2 of the young Nuns who spoke english. They were interested to hear about my day and their smiles at the end of a day of walking around Roma were most welcome. The location near the Colosseum and other attractions and via Merulana a street I found great food and felt safe by myself at night. Thanks again.
Beatrice - South Australia, Australia (September 2012)
We really enjoyed our stay. The convent's courtyard was a restful relief from the bustle of Rome. I was not expecting much of the breakfast having read some disparaging remarks from previous visitors, but these were very misleading. We loved the crusty Italian bread rolls, and the fruit yogurt. The nuns were so gracious and friendly, even if our French and Italian were very limited. We would definitely return.
Bronwen - New South Wales, Australia (September 2012)
Very comfortable room - the nuns were friendly and helpful, the garden was beautiful and lovely to relax in on hot days. Breakfast was adequate. Very convenient to Colosseo, via Cavour and Roma Termini - but in lovely neighbourhood. Incredible value for money - I would definitely go back on future visits.
Susan - London, United Kingdom (September 2012)
Beautiful and graceful place, where one can enjoy the peace and serenity of the Monastery, after a long day of sightseeing in Rome. If I go back to Rome, I would certainly stay there again.
Charl - Gauteng, South Africa (July 2012)
The only down side with regards to my stay was the significant issues with the language barrier. Communication was impossible for me as I do not speak Italian or French and only one nun spoke and understood English.
Lynne - Edinburgh (City of), United Kingdom (June 2012)
Great location a nice five minute walk to Il Colosseo. The accomodations good rooms spotless, and lovely gardens. The nuns very helpful, very little English spoken.
Margaret - NC, United States (April 2012)
We were very happy with the services of Monastery Stays and the monastery itself, the peace and quite after a long day in Rome was much appreciated and good for the soul.
Monika Ludwiga - , Germany (March 2012)
The nuns were delightful, very welcoming. The convent was ideally situated for the main archeological sites. However, the room was not air conditioned or fan cooled and the weather was extremely hot. This meant sleeping with the windows open which allowed for traffic and general city noise disturbing sleep.
Sandra - Dumfries & Galloway, United Kingdom (September 2011)
Definitely recommended! A perfect location and a beautiful building plus all the sisters were very warm, friendly and helpful.
Andrew - , United Kingdom (August 2011)
The sisters were extrememly nice and helpful! It was very beautiful with clean rooms and private bathroom. Located on a quiet street, and the monastery was also very quiet.
Tiffany - WI, United States (May 2011)
Great location near the Colosseum/Roma Antica and the nuns are all very nice. I was able to get by with Spanish and hand-gestures. The rooms are also quiet and very clean. Bed is pretty comfortable. Overall I enjoyed my stay and I would definitely lodge there again.
Christopher - TX, United States (May 2011)
I cannot fault my stay one bit. The Nuns were so lovely and kind ,the convent was super clean ,it was so quiet and tranquil it was the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The gardens and roof terrace were heavenly...a real sanctuary. I had a brilliant break and would definately stay there next time I go to Rome. Thank you.
sally - Herts, United Kingdom (May 2011)
Thouroughly enjoyable italian experience, beautiful building, large rooms, clean big bathrooms, quiet location but great for restaurants and public transport.
Jeffrey - Western Australia, Australia (December 2010)
The nuns were very pleasand and helpful. They arranged for our airport transport and gave us good bus information to get around the city. The location was good, and the rooms very large. There was a large garden and terrace that we had access to. Very clean. It was all fine.
Caryl - IL, United States (September 2010)
I expected a convent to be simple and plain. I also expected to be segregated from the sisters. I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful facility, and to have daily interactions with the nuns who were so welcoming and helpful. The gardens were lush and relaxing, and the antique furnishings and art work were gorgeous. The staff was helpful and had warm curiosity about us as guests, not just paying customers. The language barrier was a challenge, but everyone did their best to meet the challenge with humor and caring attention. I felt like a special, honored guest, not just a paying customer.
Our nuns spoke mostly French and Italian, only a couple spoke English, but everyone was willing to try to cobble together enough words in three languages that we all understood each other. We got numerous giggles over our fumbled attempts and sometimes resorted to sign language. I would certainly recommend it to people who would appreciate and respect it. I don't think a convent or monastery stay is the right option for everyone, but for older travelers, or those who respect the facility and the environment they are in, it's ideal.
Kathleen - WA, United States (May 2010)
The nunnery was beautiful. An oasis in noisy Rome. The nuns were very hospitable. The rooms were fantastic; clean and large, beds comfortable and warm, bathroom large, very functional, water hot and plenty of towels. Breakfast very adequate. Also the internal garden was beatuiful kept and very, very quiet. We were able to climb to the top of the nunnery tower and onto the roof to take beautiful photographs of Rome.
Michele - Victoria, Australia (March 2010)
The welcome was great, the rooms were clean and the people friendly The only thing which I would improve is breakfast. The choice was small.
Julia Josepha Maria - , Netherlands (November 2009)
Very clean, Nuns were very friendly and helpful. The beds could have been a bit more comfortable.
Jodie - New South Wales, Australia (November 2009)
The sisters were friendly and helpful, the room was very nice, the building and garden lovely. And as a woman by herself in Rome, I felt very safe there.
Imogene - NM, United States (June 2009)
Clean and safe. Lacked professionalism, breakfast adaquate but not up to normal European standard. Could be more homely. Favourably priced, excellent location.
Eileen - Palmerston North , New Zealand (May 2009)
This was a wonderful place to stay: clean, well-run, beautiful cloisters, helpful efficient nuns and a great location in Rome.
Jill - MN, United States (May 2009)
Although I expected the nuns to be polite and pleasant they were more friendly and helpful than I expected. The other pleasant surprise was that we stayed in Roma and Roma is so noisy and frenetic it was lovely to come back to an oasis of calm. I don't think even the best hotel could have offered such a relaxing and quiet atmosphere. The room was large and comfortable. The nuns and other staff extremely pleasant and helpful. It had a lovely garden. I enjoyed sitting at large tables and meeting other guests for breakfast. Everything was lovely except the hard rolls for breakfast. However this style of roll was on sale in all the local shops so I presume Italians like them!
Gordon - , United Kingdom (March 2009)
The room itself though simple was a in wonderful condition. The bathroom was a also a nice size. The nuns and staff were beautiful sweet people, very friendly. My only complaint would be the curfew however it was never an issue for me as I was always in before 10:00 PM.
Crista - CA, United States (March 2009)
The convent we stayed in was very clean, spacious, quiet, safe, and had a lovely view. The nuns that ran it were very kind and helpful. The room was cold and the breakfast was terribly sparse - hard rolls and coffee. They have a 10pm curfew. It was a great value for our money.
Jason - NY, United States (January 2009)
Relaxing place. Family feeling. Monastery room/bathroom were spacious and very clean. The garden was a nice plus. People were very nice, courteous and helpful. No language barrier. The breakfast was too simple. We would have liked also some fruit and yogourt, or something else than just bread and jam. Recommend: ABSOLUTELY!
Odile - CA, United States (October 2008)
This was our first monastery stay and we were knocked out. Really enjoyed ourselves. We were warmly welcomed. Great breakfasts, hosts endeavoured to group us with like language groups the people we met. The staff we met. Quiet. Good beds.
William - New South Wales, Australia (September 2008)
They were very friendly and accommodating. I really enjoyed their gardens. The rooms were very clean. The building was beautiful. The curfew added a bit of stress. I already have recommended.
Diane - CA, United States (September 2008)
Sisters very friendly and helpful. Clean and quiet room
Felt very safe throughout the stay - the curfew at 10:30pm although this was understandable.
Michelle - CA, United States (September 2008)
It was clean. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The nuns were very nice. We felt safe. The grounds were beautiful. The breakfast was minimal. The curfew was a little early. Very limited English is spoken.
virginia - IN, United States (September 2008)
The rooms were clean & beds comfortable. The bathroms was excellent with separate shower cubicle. The nuns spoke french which was a little confusing but there were some english speaking nuns to help us when needed. The cloisters and gardens were beautiful. The other guests at breakfast were very helpful and friendly.
MRS ANN - South Australia, Australia (September 2008)
Great location and the nuns were great. Lighting outside too dark for the area and lights in the room too dark.
Susan - Ontario, Canada (September 2008)
Room was very nice. Staff was excellent. Most of the staff and guests only spoke French (which we do not speak) - which caught us off guard. No problem, we were able to get by but it would have been nice to know that before arrival.
Michael - GA, United States (September 2008)
Safe, beautiful, wonderful Rome experience. Bed a bit stowic. Mother Superior could not speak English so I had to rely on my high school french. She was very understanding and all went well.
Don - Ontario, Canada (June 2008)
The garden was spectacular. We couldn't have had such a glorious, colorful, restful garden in a hotel, even if we'd paid $1,000 a night. The sisters were hospitable, the monastery very clean, rooms comfortable and welcoming.
Communication was at times a little fragmentary, between my skimpy Italian and the French speaking sisters' skimpy English, but we managed. I already have recommended, with great enthusiasm
Mary - MN, United States (June 2008)
I stayed in Rome, and I don't speak Italian. My convent was a French order, and I am fluent in French, so staying with nuns who speak French was very helpful. The breakfast was only dry store bread and coffee. The coffee was good.
Susan - MA, United States (March 2008)
We had a wonderful experience staying in the convent. The rooms were first rate we felt like we were staying in a five star hotel. The breakfast could have had a little more variety.
James - LA, United States (November 2007)
Friendly nuns, comfort
mary - VT, United States (October 2007)
I would not hesitate to stay there again. The peace and quiet after the rush and bustle of Rome and its proximity to both metro and bus services. My room had everything I needed. Some anxiety about the curfew (10.30pm) given that Metro A closed at 9 pm for night work, and some difficulty in communication as my Italian was sketchy to say the least and there was only one sister who spoke English - but that is not that their fault! The only proviso is the curfew but otherwise no hesitation.
Mary - New South Wales, Australia (September 2007)
