House of the Suore Francescane AlcantarineCasa Madonna della Pace is a traditional Umbrian delight with characteristic stone walls and a grand archway entrance. Ideally located in the heart of Assisi's historic center between the Saint Francis and Santa Chiara Basilicas.This convent is surrounded by some of the most historical churches in Assisi, the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the World Heritage listed Basilica di Santa Francesco. The Saint Francis Basilica was built after his canonization in 1228, and completed in 1253. The lower church hosts frescoes by renowned late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto. In the upper church there are frescoes of scenes in the life of Saint Francis previously ascribed to Giotto and now thought to be by artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini of Rome. The Basilica was restored after being badly damaged in 1997 when an earthquake hit the town. The building itself is a typical and beautifully presented Umbrian villa with feature stone and lovely courtyard garden. Mass is held at 7:20am & 6:30pm. Breakfast is included in the price.
